It wouldn’t be the same Skybolt no matter how good Mick and Shea are with the paint guns!

I wont tell if you don’t…….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Nord 1002’s can be painted like Bf108 Taifuns and get away with it so can we. Go on, be a devil; it will be the “surprise” for the 2010 Leg Pulls, sorry Leg Ends. It is easier to have a fake T-41 than a couple of Tempests on the flight line. Or is it….?????

Still waiting for a Cessna T-41 -ask every year and still nothing!

Hi-jack a bog standard Cessna F172 Skyhawk and repaint it in Saudi AF T-41 marks. Mick Allen at Turweston will give you a good quote and do a magnificent job. No one will know, except you and zillions of rivet counters.

:diablo::diablo::diablo::diablo:
PS – I flew a T-41 at the Bergstrom AFB base Aero Club back in 1991 when a good friend, Major Bill Gunn, was based there flying RF4C recce Phantoms. He had been based at RAF Alconbury for a couple of tours either side of two in Thailand and going “unarmed and unafraid” over the North in the early 1970’s. He reckoned the first part was true but the second was totally false and he had the laundry bills to prove it. MiG’s and SAMS plus the densest AAA ever made it a lethal environment only countered by the following- “Make it low, make it fast and make it once….!!!!”. Good advice even today for anyone contemplating a low pass round the girl friends house. But do not quote me please though I have followed the advice in the past to good effect. While at Alconbury Bill owned a Turbulent G-AWBM which he flew with us in the Barnstormers Flying Circus all over the UK and Europe in many airshows. A great pilot and a quintessential Texan. He is now Head of Aviation Safety in the Texas Department of Transportation located in Austin. A fabulous character.

In these days when there is so much talk about the lack of proper grade fuel (and even lack of fuel all together), it is refreshing to see that the lubrication side is well taken care of. That will add to the longivety of engine life I’m sure.

As for excess use I can only imagine that the consequences would be somewhat similar to the effect of the triptane formula racing fuel that blew high performance engines left, right, and center during the post-war Cleveland races?

Best of luck with mixing the concoction. I will listen carefully for detonation on and around Duxford this coming weekend.

Myself, I will more than likely use this stuff, which was never meant to blast the Space Shuttle into orbit!

And I trust neither of these Tempests has been re-engined..? 😉

T J

The most recent one has the engine that was installed originally however the 1938 initial concept model had a problem in 1999 which required attention from the experts in the PDH CCU but has had no reoccurrance of the problem. It gets a daily dose of prescribed substances and, apart from a slight rattle when shaken by turbulence, seems fine. No doubt they will be firing on all cylinders at the weekend. Though if it is very hot they can be difficult to start and need to be parked in the shade.

A Czech artist friend is bringing along some magic potion from that country which goes by the trade name “Slivovice”. Some new brew of upper cylinder lubricant I believe. It seems that when added to the fuel tank it imparts considerable benefit though an excess can be disastrous and misfiring can occur. I tried using an early formulation around 45 years ago in what was then the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (CSSR) and it blew a head off. No doubt the new version will be less violent in its effect. I do hope so as my engine can be delicate on occasion.

Much better idea than ‘we’ll meet by the Beaufighter’. We’ll meet by the Saunders!

Andy, do you mind arriving on a Space Hopper so that we know who you are?

PS – One Tempest will be at Duxford on the North side today but only up to 17:00 and is likely to return every day up to Friday with a similar time limit. The other is being fettled to be there for both days at the weekend. there is a strong possibility that the two Tempests will be there, but not in formation, on Saturday and Sunday.

Quickly, someone get a camera!

I find it surprising that, with a clear breach of rule 5, there has been no moderator intervention on this thread overnight. Or has bazv hit the nail on the head?

Everyone is entitled to their views and no-one here has, I think, suggested otherwise. It’s just the manner in which they are put – and have been put here.

It is possible to disagree with someone and describe their views as being, in the respondent’s opinion, totally incorrect, inappropriate and unacceptable – without describing the person as “mentally challenged” or “not entitled to an opinion expressed in a public forum” or that “they should remain securely in a sound proof padded cell”.

Positions which are inherently strong and are argued by intelligent, well mannered people have no need of insults. I am not equipped authoritatively to comment on the former. As to the latter, and as latin recently has been employed here, I shall limit my comment to res ipsa loquitur.

Well Ancient Aircraft, I am an expert on Rule 5 as it happens. Having been an expert witness on behalf of my former employers on a number of occasions. Where the case went to prosecution we were always successful since my judgement and expertise proved adequate for the courts. The 500 foot rule, for this is the Rule 5 with which I am familiar, is a fair one and more permissive than that in most other countries. Even France, though similar, is slightly more demanding. Should you break it then beware for retribution will surely follow but only if the witnesses are credible and their evidence will stand up to investigation.

I have no doubt you mean well but both protagonists here have now calmed down. After a good nights sleep I am in a better frame of mind than late last night. I trust you are too.

Let us all enjoy the coming weekend, spectators, pilots, owners, organisers and even uninvited hedge guests who are enthusiasm rich but cash poor..

I am reminded of the childhood adage that “Sticks and stones may break my bonnes…. but words will never hurt me”. You have been hurt, that I accept, though not in a physical sense. Others have been by the actions of those who put themselves in places they should not be in. That is a fact.

From your address it may be that my birthplace in the White Rose county and your home in the Red Rose one as a little to do with it. Regard this as a Roses match and let it die. The points have been made.

Skybolt……..

I read back carefully through what I have written, to be candid I am not quite sure what has really “set you off”. I have no desire to “bait you” or anything like that. I too have been around here a while and have not had a “spat” with any one else.

I understand why you feel passionately about the topic but it does not excuse you hurling uncalled for insults. I respect your experience however it still does not give you the right to insult fellow forum members, who ever they maybe.

I hope am not adding fuel to the fire. I was not at Rouen, guess you were. From the report I read it would appear that those who may have contributed towards the incident were on a runway on the airfield not quite the same situation as someone being adjacent to a perimeter fence and quite possibly on a public highway.

Anyway, I just ask you to accord me the same respect as I accord you. Not unfair methinks……..
