In a change to information in circulation, the Moth Rally at Woburn is will occur on JUST the Sunday (Aug 20) this year. For many years it has been the ‘Woburn weekend.’
Ill-feeling rumbles on regarding the huge rise in admission charge for the general public which in 2005 rose from £5.00 per person, to £15.00. This rate is set by the Abbey and NOT the Moth Club, who are advising a return to a more reasonable fee.
Last year saw a number of would-be Moth watchers reverse out of the queues, when faced with a £60 charge for a car of four passengers.
If you have strong feelings about this, it could be worth getting in touch with Woburn Abbey, and letting them know, before the rates are finally established, and publicity material circulated.

At Woburn we managed 30 plus aircraft, including one DH.60, a number of Tigers, Leopard and Hornet Moths, Chipmunks, a Moth Minor (DH.94), Dragon and Dragonfly. Two interlopers were a Super Cub and an Auster.
Rain stayed off although it was spitting a few times.

I did not bother with Sywell in the end. I went to Old Warden which was a wash out basicaly. I may go to Wobun tomorrow if the weather is half decant.

A few more turned up later DB, but not the 47 booked in. i was at Kemble yesterday, dodged the Thunderstorms on the way down and sat at Rendcomb for a while as one passed by!!! certainly was a bit thin on the ground, hopefully they had a better day today.

Windy with some sun but lots of stormy cumulous clouds building up producing heavy showers in the west. Must have hit the PFA Rally at Kemble also 😮 Not at all nice conditions to fly light vintage aircraft.

Do you have to pay to gain entry to the Moth Club arena as well?
You have to pay £15 per person in a car for entry to Woburn Park, but you have to be a member of the Moth Club to enter the fenced-off enclosure, although you should be able to get all the photos you want without entering the enclosure! There is no actual charge by the Moth Club for their event.
As suggested, it would be far better to avoid this fiasco and to hold it at Sywell or somewhere equally Moth-friendly!

Propstrike – I don’t think that the Moth Club is pitching its Woburn event to attract the family outing brigade or to give ‘value for money’ for the paying punters. It seems to me that the Club is trying to keep its Woburn tradition alive in the face of rabid exploitation by the Abbey’s business managers. It is they who are pitching for the family outing market, even to the extent this year of advertising heavily on TV, although they would say that your ticket gives access to the Abbey and other attractions as well as access to the Deer Park. Oh, I think you will find that it is FLOUR bombing rather than flower bombing.
Ewan HA – I think you can only access the Club enclosure as a member of the Moth Club or as the guest of a member.

Although I only live ten minutes away, after 20 years I stopped going to the Moth Rally a couple of years back when the enforced changes spoilt the atmosphere for me. Reducing it still further to a single day seems to beg the question of just how much longer it will continue?

Regrettably, the events Manager at Woburn has elected to disregard the input and advice from various directions and so the £15 admission (per person) charge still stands.
There will be a height judging contest, and flower bombing in lieu of the traditional flying demonstrations. Hard to see how this will constitute any sort of value for money, but time will tell.
Anyway, the intention is to pitch the event more to attract the family-outing market than aviation enthusiasts.

A report says that the Moths will be at Sywell on Sat before travelling down to Woburn on Sunday. I think they should stay at Sywell and Boycot Woburn.

No it would not be appropriate or neccessary to contact Lady Tavistock. The Estate, and its numerous events and commercial activities are run as a business, employing full-time staff. Any internet-savvy person could be talking to the right dept after a moments research.
The event has always been under the auspices of the Moth Club, but by invitation from and with the blessing of (now) Lady Tavistock. Woburn park has a long tradition of aviation;- towards the end of the WW2, Short Stirlings were flown in there. Mind you, they were not flown out again!
