Afternoon all…
I’d appreciate pointers as to what film(s) these post-war types were dressed up for:

Any chance to Harvard/AT6 were used in “Von Ryans Express” I think starring good old blue eyes himself. Frank Sinatra?
Been a while since I saw it, but I don’t remember there being any Harvards in Von Ryan’s Express. Are you maybe thinking of the Messerschmitt Bf108s masquerading as ‘109s towards the end?

I believe the T-6s are from the Condor Sqdn in Calif. half are painted U.S, and half are luftwaffe.

Patton film P-51
The P-51 in the Patton film (if it ever appeared in the film – my memory says it didn’t appear on screen) was I believe the Shoreham based Mustang of Charles Masefield. She’s now based near Port Elizabeth in South Africa.

Could be bad memory here, but I thought that the Luftwaffe marked Texans (T-6s, SNJs etc!) were actually post-war W.German Air Force aircraft?
I’m sure there is another thread on these somewhere.

I thought it was a great film when I saw in 1949, but I was only 8! Saw it again when I was a lot older on the ‘box’ not so impressed. But I did observe a certain Rock Hudson playing a bit part, he must have impressed the USAF because he later played a SAC wing commander in ‘A Gathering of eagles’ starring B-52’s.in 1963:diablo:
I too was blown away when I first saw Fighter Squadron when I was about the same age. The aerial and airfield sequences are great, although the plot and some of the acting leaves alot to be desired! My grumble in the above link is the cheesy promotional style rather than the film itself. 🙂
As for the Patton film, weren’t the Mustangs dressed as Messerschmitts and the Messerschmitts dressed as Mustangs??

Not to mention the Patton Buchons…

This thread could go on – I think its a very interesting subject in terms of the present day ‘warbird movement’. I seem to recall there were P-51’s in ‘Patton – Lust for Glory’ dressed as enemy aircraft but would have to check on that…..

[QUOTE=AdlerTag;1683272]I can’t say for certain, but the P51 looks very much like those dressed up for the movie ‘Fighter Squadron’ in 1948. A shot of the Mustangs appears very very briefly on the trailer on the link below- brace yourself for some of the cheesiest war-movie promotion ever seen! 😀

Thanks for the additional info Chris…
As for Texans, Harvards, etc, etc… I’ve only just got me head around French licence-built NAA57’s and NAA63’s impressed into wartime service with the Luftwaffe! 😉
For the record:
N16730 – North American AT-6C
N7969C – North American SNJ-5

Thanks to spitfireman we know the registry of the first “Texan” (which actually seems to be a Harvard?)
http://www.warbirdregistry.org/texanregistry/harvard-753473.html
I am also under the impression, that this plane may be used to be wearing “enemy” colours and not necessarily had been repainted for movie work.

Thanks for the confirmation Daz… it appears that the SNJ-5 in the photo kindly linked by Spitfireman has claimed a few kills since being caught on camera in my first post. Perhaps the colour photo was taken post-filming 🙂
Here is the same photo after some manipulation…

Yep, the Mustang is definitely Fighter Squadron.
The Harvards used in Where Eagles Dare have been covered frequently on the forums. Can’t recall what air force they were supplied by, though. Swiss, maybe?

SNJ-5 Where Eagles Dare perhaps?

Thanks for the points AT… we have a possible sighting for the second SNJ-5 here, but beware, Pat Benatar music video alert, so it may be advisable to switch the sound off when viewing… :dev2:
