Some years back there was a very useful list of identification serial numbers posted on this forum for old wooden propellers, but having searched I cannot find it anymore. Anyhow here is a query from me.
A recent acquisition of mine is this mounted wooden propeller boss. Plaque states Crashed Dover (Kent U.K.) 23/09/1918
I cannot find any record for an aircraft crashing in Dover on this particular date although I have identified one 2 days later on the 25/09/1918 which was a Short 184 of 233 Squadron.
To confirm either way I just wondered if any one can help tell me what type of aircraft or engine type the propeller number inscription G690N38 would have been fitted to? The propeller has an additional embossed inscription of ‘Gun Timmings’. Not sure if a Short 184 had guns as it was used in the role of Naval Torpedo bomber and reconnaissance.
Also I wonder why hasn’t this prop got any mounting holes (normally 6-8 in total) on this boss?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks dhfan, I agree with your observation.

Gun Timings suggests to me that it was fitted to a fighter with interrupter gear and had to be fitted in the correct orientation on the crankshaft.
On that basis, a Short 184 seems pretty unlikely.
