Woolfox Lodge (manor house)?

I understand that the old Woolfox Lodge airfield was named after a nearby manor house that had been requisitioned by the RAF.

So then does anybody know where this house is/was?

I cant find it listed on the map!

Great to see you made it to Woolfox Lodge Simon. I used to drive past the place on a daily basis until about 5 years ago, and on cold, bright mornings especially I could clearly see the watch office and always meant to go to explore.

In the end, due to the comments I have heard about the landowners not granting access, all I have ever managed to get are a few pictures from outside the fence.

Thanks for the heads up guys, have just added photos. May have to swing by that way again in a few weeks and check out those woods that used to house some of the huts.

The little map I was using only listed the ones West of the A1, and looking at windows local live they’ve long gone.

Tell you what, the bloody footpaths aren’t very well maintained by the farmers, or the council. Theres supposed to be a path going from the layby on the A1 just north of the airfield, that skirts around the northern bit. To get onto it you have to climb up a bank of nettles/thistles and hop over a fence (thank god I wasnt wearing shorts this time). And theres a dirt bike track people use right next to it, so don’t try and cut accross that if you value your life .

I’d recommend using the farmers entrance a bit further down. Where’s the ramblers assosiaton when you need them?

On www. rutnet.co.uk the registered address for UFAC is….

UFAC (UK) Ltd (animal feed/supplements)
Woolfox Lodge
Great North Road
Stretton
Rutland LE15 7QT

I pretty sure it is the right location Simon, perhaps one of the forumites who lives fairly close could supply a photo ?
Great website by the way!
Amongst the old airfields I cycled to were Folkingham and Polebrook(which I always found a bit ‘spooky’) and I started gliding at Spitalgate in the summer of ’69(as Bryan Adams might say !!)

Simon, Hi,
Try either the Rutland County Council Planning Dept “Sites and Monuments Records” (SMR) or, alternatively, Oakham County Museum. But as with all these organisations some are extremely helpful, whilst others are not!!

Blimey havent been to that area for years but used to cycle round the old airfields near peterborough when I was young and fit in the mid 60’s!
I Think Woolfox Lodge(sometimes called Woolfox House) is nth of the airfield right next to the A1(east side) and almost directly opposite the Olde Greetham Inn(always navigate via pubs!!).
So it is probably at lodge farm, and probably is occupied now by

woolfox lodge

hi, the airfield was situated mostly in the parish of pickworth and constructed as a satellite field for nearby cottesmore, woolfox lodge manor nearby was requisitioned for use as aircrew accomodation and the airfield was thus named .the manor house was situated on the eastern side of the then A1 trunk road, and is still extant i believe ,i cant think why its not shown on the o/s map:cool: 😎 😎

Hi Simon

What’s up with not making tomorrow at East Kirkby then? Working, no excuse!!

Anyway Woolfox Lodge. As you know it got it’s name from the nearby Woolfox Lodge Manor house, no surprises there then. As for location I was always under the impression it was the lodge to the north of the airfield, east of the A1. If you look at this link to the magic map of the area

http://www.magic.gov.uk/website/magic/opener.htm?startTopic=maglandclass&xygridref=495597,314617&startScale=13895

at the top is “manor farm” possibly the same. certainly if you zoom in there are a lot of legends such as “camp site” “disused camp” etc. With Magic these are nearly always ex dispersed sites – which would put it in the right area.

Interestingly though I have seen reference to Wolfoxs’ dispersed sites being to the west of the A1, indeed Magic reinforces this with several “suspect” structures shown. However without a doubt there are others to the north.

The bomb dump at Woolfox is roughly southeast, as you know dispersed accommodation and communal sites are always geographically opposed to the bomb dumps, for obvious reasons, again putting the Lodge in the right area.

I know Richard Flagg has had a query relating to woolfox from a correspondent, perhaps he can help further. From speaking to Richard though what is apparent is the hostility of the landowner to people seeking access to the airfield. Perhaps we are becoming victims to the exploits of the 28 days later boys!!

Hope that helps, no doubt someone will post and tell you exactly where it is / was, no doubt blowing my theory apart!

Take care Simon, see you soon mate.

Noel
