world war 2 aviation movies

I am buying dvds like a man possessed at the moment, but despite the obvious ones such as B.O.B, Memphis belle, 663 squadran, mosquito squadran, dambusters etc, what ones do people recommend? 😀

Wasn’t “Always” a remake of a war time film called “a guy named Joe”

How about…

Angels One Five with the great Jack Hawkins, and
Flying Leathernecks, with John Wayne (he’s no Jack Hawkins).

“Operation mincemeat”, wouldn’t it have been a great job thinking up interesting code names for the various ops! Angels one five, haven’t seen that for a few years

I don’t know the film title or the film, but I know it’s a true story.

Have a look here for inspiration: http://www.channel4.com/film/newsfeatures/microsites/W/greatest_warfilms/

One I would recommend if I could remember the title, is a film about an attempt by the British military to confuse the Germans by putting fake papers on a dead body and leaving it in waters near the German coast in the hope it would be washed ashore and be discovered by the Germans…The papers contained details of a fake invasion plan, in the hope that the Germans would think they had stumbled on Britain’s plans to invade a particular place, while the British were actually planning on invading somewhere entirely different.

I think the title is something like “Man Without a Name” but IMDB does not come up with an exact match for that. Anyone know what I am talking about?!?

Fighter Squadron, released 1948. Loads of Jugs. Uses P51s as German fighters but never mind. Good movie.

Tora! Tora! Tora! is excellent too.

Which Bader movie? ‘Reach for the Sky’? Classic.

One I’d like to know about, if available on DVD, written by John Sullivan (‘Only Fools & Horses’) is ‘Over Here’ – a belting three-part semi-comedy shown on BBC (I think) in the late 90s. I had it in VHS but, whilst trawling through them again I can’t find it. Starred Simon West (Timothy West and Prunella Scales put in guest apprearances at the front and end of the trilogy, as ‘older’ versions of themselves ‘today’ from the characters played in the film) and also starred Martin Clunes as an ex-fighter pilot with a serious case of the ‘twitch’. Damn goo dentertainment at towards the end, very moving.

Is it out there at all? Daz?

Chris

To the best of my knowledge, no, it’s not available on DVD or VHS. Never has been, as far as I can tell (I did once contact the BBC, and they had no plans to release it at the time).

I do, however, have it transferred from VHS to DVD, via one of the forumites (damned, though, if I can think who did it for me!! Sorry! :()

I’d recommend ’30 Second Over Tokyo’… contains some great footage shot during the run – and some not too bad re-creations – you do have to look beyond some of the ‘hokey’ acting.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen it on DVD yet… even my old VHS copy was purchased from a delete bin about 20 years ago for $2.

“Piece of Cake” 3 DVD set of a six part BBC mini series from the ’90’s. Similar to BoB but more emphasis on the changing attitudes and effects on young flyers through the evacuation and BoB. Brilliant flying by Ray H and others.
Bet you watch it end to end!

ITV series actually, not available over here, my Amazon copy is an American production and not good quality either.
Try Dark Blue World and the search button on this site.
