Worst war film

I remember seeing a film some years ago which starred Kirk Douglas as an RAF pilot (?). I also remember the dog fight scenes which showed Spitfires in German markings and Messerschmitts with RAF roundals.

Does anyone know what this film was of did I dream it?

Tony.

Red Baron, at the very least, had some of the correct aircraft in its flying sequences….

I have just commented on The Red Baron in a thread on the historic forum. As films go it’s up there with Braveheart for historical accuracy.

There are some pretty dire war films on the free to view film channels on Sky.
Mostly featuring Italians playing English, Germans and Americans.

What was the name of the fairly dire piece of rubbish that was on TCM a few times lately ? Just as you describe, Italians playing Americans and Germans, M48 Pattons playing Tigers and Shermans, God alone knows what kind of mgs and smgs, Uniforms that beggered beleif with what looked like those plastic helmets kids used to get when they were 6 or 7…couldnt watch it for more than 5 mins ! Cant think of the name but want to make sure i dont watch it by mistake !!!

Then there are some that some people think are okay that i just find too far fetched to be believed, one for example is “The Battle of the Bulge” with Robert shaw and Henry Fonda, again mostly the wrong armour with nothing done to enhance the looks, but it was the scenery that got to me, more like North Africa than the Ardennes !

But apart from the older stuff there are some pretty awful modern examples that cost a lot, “Shining through” with Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffin ? “Pearl Harbour” ?

That’s the one. I find it bizarre that the Spitfires and Messerschmitts fly in opposite markings one minute, then fly in the correct colours the next!!

Just found this on Youtube. Note the Spitfire markings at 2:20.

These sequences were recycled for the film From Hell to Victory, starring George Peppard, a few years later!

Ah, well I could have got the actor wrong but I’m glad the film exists. I’ll have to try and find a copy, for a laugh. Many thanks for the info.

I’m not sure on the Kirk Douglas part, but no, you didn’t imagine the RAF Messerschmitts and Luftwaffe Spitfires!!

These were originally in a film called Eagles Over London, which is an Italian WW2 film set during the Battle of Britain, and obviously written by a scriptwriter who was high on drugs!

Several real Buchons are seen in sequences painted in RAF markings (complete with 303 Squadron codes!), while several Spitfire models appear in Luftwaffe camouflage. Three Harvards also appeared in German markings in the Dunkirk sequences.

These sequences were recycled for the film From Hell to Victory, starring George Peppard, a few years later!
