Worth Matravers/Swanage

Has anyone got any pictures or definitive information about either the Swanage Aerodrome (prewar at N50.35.32 W 02.02.46: ) or the Worth Matravers strip.
Regards the Worth strip, the precise location is needed…was it the same as the prewar aerodrome? Also any detrails for either one of strip direction, length ,ASL etc.

BOBKat….yes , I’ve seen that and various other “air shots” none of which really pin things down.

I suggest that if you go on Flight Global and use the historic page you can browse inputting Isle of Purbeck Flying Club which might give some background for your research.

Been done ages ago…apart from some mentions of flying hours in 1928 and a few other trivia …nothing under Purbeck, Swanage, Matravers and various other search terms.

daveg4otu, do you have a copy of “Secret War in Purbeck” by Jonathan Penley and Dr Bill Penley CB CBE? I think I obtained this from the museum in Worth Matravers. It has an aerial photo of the Worth Matravers C-Site with marks in the field which seem to be a landing strip? Or is this part of the contradictory information you already have?

Yes there is plenty of info about what went on at Worth…but nothing definitive about the airstrip used …not even a precise location.Even the Purbeck Radar Museums booklets are contradictory….as noted on AiX by HF Dave.

Likewise the Swanage Aerodrome, which apparently thrived after opening in 1928 (128 members)and disappeared without trace at some point in the thirties seems to be in the same area as the Worth TRE.

Were there not a radar station during the war at Worth Matravers?

Yes, and it was that radar establishment (TRE) that the airstrip served in WW2. Very little known about either this strip or the Swanage aerodrome…what little known is here…..
