UK will keep one in reserve. The other two will soldier on untill the new planned carriers come online. So, there’s nothing to sell.
at the moment.

I agree. The UK should not support the sales of weapons to a nation that continues to pose a threat to our interests, and has been prepared to launch unprovoked invasions of our territory in the past.

yah mate we know i dont think we could ever trust the arginitians fully ever again

Um….I was joking with the Argentina thing………I don’t think Britain would EVER sell Argentina another A/C carrier.

IN is ordering 2 mistral class LPD’s. So why not a couple of LPH in the next 6-7 years.
By: WisePanda - 23rd January 2006 at 12:19
IN could actually use it as a helo ASW carrier , armed with a few ASW Klubs, some heavy blackshark torpedoes, a cell of barak/kashtan and ofcourse around 10 swanky new NH90 with exocet and torpedoes.
but realistically no money for it.

Argentina could use a replacement for Vienticinco de Mayo…………..
I would agree…….yet the problem is finding the money! 😮
By: Arabella-Cox - 21st January 2006 at 23:18
My money’s on Chile to buy one of the older vessels, with the newest one staying in service with the RN as an LPH, but with the ability to carry fixed wing if required.
I think South American in general could be a good market for the Ex-RN Carriers. In the short-term they could operate surplus Harriers and possibly JSF further down the road. Personally, I consider it very likely…….. 😀

Ocean is a much modified Invincible desighn. I doubt it would be very easy to fit a dock of any worth.
By: harryRIEDL - 21st January 2006 at 17:17
could be possible to fit a dock and refit the ship to be more commando carrier type.
the ocen are based on the invinsable class arn’t they
By: lukeylad - 21st January 2006 at 17:00
the invincables are the some of the most modern carriers in the world there kept in great condtion they have all been reffited 4 times in the last 6 years allone we could sell one off defently india would make good use of one. They have kept hermes going strong she still looks brand new some times
By: vikraal - 21st January 2006 at 14:51
IN could look into using it as a helicopter carrier with slight modifications, but it all depends on how much it would cost. I don’t think age is an issue, invincible is 25 years old i believe while the hermes is going strong at 50.

The age of these ships ISNT a problem, they have been kept in very good condition and have recieved regular upgrades, the need for reconditioning would be very limited. The problem is a lack of a market, Spain, Australia and Italy, have opted to build brand new ships of this size so they are out. Brazil has already satisfied her carrier needs with the purchase of a Foch class. India is building the ADS and buying the former Gorschkov so she is out. The only realistic carrier operating nation this leaves is Thailand and she can barely afford to keep the one she has afloat.
If a country did want to buy one of these an airwing shouldnt be to much trouble, with the US likely to have Surplus AV-8Bs in the near future (these could be re-engined with the Harrier GR-9A’s engine) and some of them have AMRAAM capability. As has already been mentioned they could also be used as JSF platforms.
Another major problem with selling these ships is that they are pure carriers, they dont have a dock, or any real amphibious capabilitys for that matter-most nations looking at ships of this type want a significant amphibious capability.

wasnt india supposedly interested in buying one of these along with some fa.2sea harriers?im not sure but i think now they are just going to concentrate on the MiG29K and their own locally built carriers!?
By: Gepard - 21st January 2006 at 11:02
The problem isn’t just age which means an extensive and expensive reconditioning of the ship but also aircraft complement. In theory they could be useful as JSF carriers but most nations planning on fielding such a capability are building their own light carriers / landing ships. I suspect the Royal Navy would want to keep them but with all their costcutting reviews its unlikely. Remember they decommissioned state of the art Upholders to save a few pennies, likewise with Sea Harrier. Its a good question though.
