WOW !!! What was it ?

An hour ago, I heard the throaty sound of radial engines come over the top of my house, so rushed outside and could not believe I was looking at what appeared to be a B-17 flying away in the direction of Hawarden Airfield. It was around 2-300 ft high and sounded great !!! WOW !!! a very rare occurrence these days. ( I live in Mold ,Nth Wales. ). Had no time to find camera, which was a shame.

Is “Sally B ” back up and flying ?? If not, what the heck was it ????

Sally B and the F86 flew together in a close formation for a few minutes on the way back to Duxford.
First Echelon right followed by left as this was better for the pictures.
The F86 had the flaps down but was able to slow down nicely and keep station.

Taken from the Spotted thread

That’s a bit of an unusual one!
What was the gen behind this one I wonder?
With only a handful of years between these two types, did this ‘escort’ scanario ever happen for real in any theatre / conflict ie, Korea for example?

I Believe they were Both At Flightfest in Ireland. No Photos As I Only Heard Them And Saw Them When I was in the garden

Or later in the Korean War (1952-53) when a detachment from VW-1, a squadron of PB-1Ws (USN B-17s with the AN/APG-20 air-search radar*), deployed to Korea to provide AEW coverage.

I would say the early days of the Korean War where SB-17’s were used for a variety of combat missions.

Unless a flight of Sabres provided cover or put on a show for a general in a VB-17G, I’d be surprised. Other than Israel, I wonder what was the last ‘normal’ combat op of a B-17?

Aaaaggrrrhhh !!! My apologies fella’s. I mis typed and the B-17’s height was in thousands of feet. DUH !!! :stupid: Had to rush off without re-checking post, (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. lol !!! )

She did look super though, even if I was looking at her rear end.

Apology accepted, CAF-UK. I suppose it’s the problem with the internet. Everything that’s posted is fair game and often mutates many times before returning to whence it originated! I doubt that I’m guiltless – albeit unintentionally – in that respect. Oh and my photograph was taken at Biggin Hill on 20 May 1979.

Avion

Apologies, found on the Vintage Wings site with no credit

I am pretty sure I was at the show with the B17 coming out of the valley – late 70’s??

Altitude is realistic if it just passed over Hawarden/Broughton. Less than 500′ over a built up area, like Mold, may be tricky to explain away..

If you’re going to use one of my photographs, CAF-UK (post #10, left hand image), you might ask and/or give me credit for it!

A few images of the B-17 in Ireland this weekend. The first two are on its arrival at Baldonnel on Saturday and the third is on a flypast over Dublin City.

I think you will find that Sally B has flown a bit lower than 300 feet in the past
