When I visited Duxford on 21-4-78 there were some wrecks (I think at the northern end of the airfield) that I couldn’t identify. I’ve recently scanned the slides I took of them and uploaded the images to Flickr:

Can anybody recognise what the wrecks were?
Many thanks in advance!

What happened to the Hess 110 wreckage? I last saw it at Lambeth, 20 years ago.

hi,
a slight thread drift, but I remember 1980 or 84, one or two Israeli Spitfires also P.51’s in one of the small buildings on the road side of the hangars, and at least one being worked on…
regards,
jack…

That would be AR501

Bruce.
Cheers for that
On the same date there was a Spitfire under restoration. I have tied it down to either AR501 or TB863.
What you think

According to the EAG’s information book, recovered from Storvatnet Lake, Norway, in August 1974 by the IWM, having crashed there on 26th April 1940. Identity somewhat doubtful – supposed to be an He111E, but wrong shaped wings.
Set on fire following initial attempts at recovery, hence the state of the forward and centre section, and sank through the ice.

Al, the first two are the He111P in question. I can see why the front section didn’t survive. The latter looks like the Rudolf Hess Bf110

Took ties in February 1975.

I think that’s the one, David – Austria rings a bell.

Probably with the CASA fuselage section that Colin Waterworth had. Believe it headed to Austria.

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere realtively recently that the He111 sections were being used in an (airworthy?) restoration somewhere.
I do recall the fuselage section out the back of the EAG building, but I don’t recall paint on it. Mind you, I was 7 when these pics were taken so…

QUOTE “Hermes fin stolen IIRC?”
Strewth, first time I’ve heard that as the explanation of its loss. It was a huge item to mislay.

Thanks Steve. That’s interesting because the note I made at the time was that it might have been a Marauder, possibly because someone told me so!

Hermes fin stolen IIRC?
By: Consul - 12th November 2017 at 17:05
I remember seeing those items junked and could hardly believe it at the time. Wasn’t the Hermes fin later also unceremoniously thrown away?

We had quite a few large bit and pieces from a Norwiegian recovered He-111 at the Rebel Air Museum. I’m guessing then that this was one of the same airframe?
Best regards;
Steve

Nice set of photo’s from another time that fortunately I remember well. Thanks for posting them. Nice “Ju-52”. I wonder what happened to that…

He-111 recovered from Norway, engine and fin now on display by IWM. Initially rescued by Essex Aviation group from the dump and put on display in their museum. At same time a 109 was recovered from Norway and ended up on the dump!
