dark light

Wrong sounding words.

Ever think that some words don’t sound right for what they actually mean? For example, if you didn’t know the meaning of the word “Abbatoir” you might think it meant some kind of gazebo or summer house; “We sat in the Abbatoir with a drink, watching the sun go down.” And how about “Redundant”? If you didn’t know what it meant you might think it was some kind of character trait, like steadfastness; “Oh yes, once he’s made his mind up about something, he can get pretty stubborn and redundant about it”

That’s the one, Laviticus! I had copies of both of the little books but they have disappeared in a move, I think.

Do you remember “The Book of Liff”? Compiled by the John Lloyd and the sorely missed Douglas Adams, it was entirely plausible definitions of place-names from all over the world.

Ditto Glockenspiel: “I have a Glockenspiel growth on my right leg.”

Isthmus, sounds like a medical complaint. Brilliant bit in Porridge, “what’s an isthmus?”

Atrium sounds medical to me aswel, but more part of the body, ‘aw my poor atrium, must be my isthmus flaring up again’

Hypotenuse really sounds like a large water loving African creature to me.

Some words don’t sound odd together

Some sound downright implausible, such as –

Intelligence Officer 😀

Some words sound odd together, moist crevice is an example that springs to mind!
