WW1 era airship, location??

Hi all.
Can anyone out there give me a location or any other info for the attached photo?
Looks to be a WW1 era R.N. coastal airship, did not think that these operated outside of the UK. Judging by the dress of the ground crew..somewhere out in the tropics..Africa / India??

Note also, what looks to be a large pussy-cat in the foreground!

Chumpy.

Neither cat nor dog but an animal that is seen everywhere in the Med. The Goat! I think Imbros in the Aegean was used by the RNAS for SS airship operations also.

I wouldn’t read too much into the creature it could well be a squadron mascot. A number of units in France had exotic mascots. I really can’t decide whether it is a large cat or dog, every time I lok at the picture I think differently to the previous time. However to my knowledge the Aegean and Med were the only places outside of home waters where SS types were operated. The temporary nature of the hanger structure would also argue for the Aegean. I have a hge library of RNAS/Fleet Air Arm books and documents and will have a ferret around to see if I can find any references to mascots with SS units.

Seriously, regardless of the species of creature, I suspect that the location is Mudros in the Aegean. The RNAS did operate SS airships from this location and it would tie in with the style of dress being worn.

Hi Martin,
A serious voice at last many thanks for your input. This gives me a starting point, will see what I can dig up re Mudros.

Should have known better than to mention the pussy cat, not many lions etc up that end of the Aegean as far as I am aware!

Cheers, Chumpy.

Looks more like a large dog – head shape and ears don’t look right for a cat.

Obviously the Squadron mascot, ‘Tigger’.
