Hi folks; The kamakazi plane i remember was made of
wood plus the uc after take off fell away to insure
a one way trip to heaven. The Roumanian fighters where
the first pics of them i’ve seen, must have been a bother
to taxi. The Horten and Arado surperb.

The u/c was indeed designed to fall away, but not because the authorities doubted the determination of the special attack volunteers. It’s just that there was a rubber shortage on, you see…

Edit – It’s a Ki-115. Wiki says the u/c thing was to save weight. Not what the Japanese TV said in a documentary I saw.

the beech 18 seen in the last pic of the first post just behind the Jap bomber later crashed into a bank in New York

20th May 1946 the New York Times reported the following. Below the Bank of Manhatten Building, thrusting more than 800’ into the murk there rained a shower of debris—an officers cap, a parachute & the wing of a plane. On the skyscrapers 58th floor lay the remains of an Army light Beechcraft transport and the bodies of it’s army pilot and 4 passengers.

It was UC-45F serial 44-47570 based at Newark NJ which was on it’s way home from Lake Charles Army Field. The Beech had tried to land at Newark but they were thwarted by fog. As they tried to locate the field they crashed into the 71 storey building and left a hole 20’ wide by 10’ high. One engine broke loose, bounced off a wall and then fell to the ground. No-one on the ground was injured but this accident led to a temporary restriction on IFR flight by all AAF C-45, AT-7 and AT-1 Beechcraft.

The building suffered an estimated $50,000 worth of damage.

The one in post #12 of the Me210/410 peeling away is a well known shot from one of the 388th BG B17s flown by Lt Head.

As the official history comments, it might had been better had the photographer had a gun rather than a camera.

I forget the name, but will look it up- what I can tell you is that it was a plywood design to be used for Kamekazi attacks, the gear was jettisoned after take off- hence the odd appearence.

Nakajima Ki-115 I think? Not sure of the code name however.

If memory serves me correctly it had quite a few different engine types installed.

Great pics.

What’s the odd-looking Japanese fighter(?) in pic.5? Looks like a Nakajima of some sort, but the gear doesn’t look right

(Also, there’s a Tora! replica Val in amongst those shots 😉 )

Whilst there are a couple of them I’ve seen before, the rest are new to me- fantastic photo’s, thank you for sharing them.:)

I noticed there are a number of Macchi 202’s , but are there any Macchi 205 shots please? the most noticeable difference is the 205 has two cylinderical filters under the nose- I am mianly after any that are post-armistice, i.e. with tri-colour national markings.

Thanks for sharing these – that is a “Betty” in surrender markings, I was stumped by the 4 engined yellow aircraft in the first set, another Japanese bomber?

That’s a Nakajima G8N. One of the prototypes did go to the ‘States for testing and evaluation, I’m guessing thats the one pictured.

The ‘Betty’ is a Mitsubishi G4M
