WW2 Aircraft Harnesses

Sorting through the shed today and I re-discovered a package of Canadian made aircraft harnesses, the applications for which I have absolutely no knowledge.

All were made by the ‘Switlick Canadian Parachute Ltd.’ and dates range from 1941 to 1944. All but one appear to be new and un-used. Anyone who can shed some light onto my shed find will earn undying gratitude.

Here’s hoping that they will be useful in some future restoration.

Dave, that’s me near cnc3. I have Reid’s Playboy. Should do a photo shoot with your 24W some time. I will contact Cam re the belts. Interested to learn more about the short section of webbing with the green tag annotated “Hurricane Belt” and “#11 AID Aug.6/43”.

Regards
John

John, Glad to connect with you, and I’m glad Reid’s Playboy stayed close. Sure, we should do a photo flight sometime and send the result to his daughter. I keep a thread going about the F-24W on wix, http://www.warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=24344&start=690

Cheers,

The ones on the far right (wide rectangular ones) are the same type used as troop and pilot harnesses in Horsa gliders up until harnesses were swapped out for the Sutton type.

I’m told they aren’t exclusive to the Horsa though and were possibly also used in Auster amongst others.

I am not sure that the ” Hurricane ” belt is from the CCF built Hurricanes . It looks more like the strap that came up from under the seat on a Tigermoth between your legs and hooked up at the lap belt
The rest of the thin ones are all Tigermoth shoulder harnesses
The wide lap belts I am thinks are Avro Anson , Cessena Crane etc
The one that is medium length is interesting , I dont recall having ever seen one before. But similar to DH type belts

A great collection. I agree with Dave that the webbing is past its life but the metal fittings are
still useable for new harnesses
Switlik was based in Ft Erie Ontario

Are you NW of Brampton, near Caledon?

Those harnesses are interesting. I think I recognize #4. I flew a restored-to-original DH-82C tiger Moth that had that. It was NOT a good harness because it did not hold you down in the seat.

But you appear to have some terrific time-capsules there. The fabric should probably not be used, but the hardware should be all right.

Do you know Cam Harrod? He’s a specialist in this sort of thing.
