WW2 Aircrash – South Moor Golf Course

I have been asked by a local historian to try and trace details of an aircrash at South Moor Golf Course, near Stanley County Durham during World War 2.

Any of the accident experts able to help

I lived in Quaking Houses right next to South Moor when the plane you refer to, crashed on the golf course. My pals and I – I was 7 at the time – were playing in and around the old air raid shelters when it came down and were among the first on the scene. To this day, I remember the huge crater it had made and the bits of debris lying around.
I moved away from Quaking Houses sometime in 1952 and have never been back since: perhaps on my next visit to the UK, I’ll get round to going their again.

Ross thanks!

Another mystery solved!

Unless South Moor Golf Course acts as some sort of Bermuda Triangle for aircraft….

There was a crash in 1951 – Your dad has a good memory

The Times – Wednesday Sept 26 1951

Pilot Officer M. F. Rogers of Northwood, Middlesex was killed yesterday when a jet Meteor fighter aircraft he was flying crashed on South Moor golf course, near Stanley Country Durham”

So all we need now is the Serial of the aircraft – If someone has a copy of Cummings Post War Losses book to hand and could look up Sept 25th 1951

You could try Hurricane AF968 55 OTU which crashed at Southmoor 12/4/42.
