Cany anyone help? A friend is updating their info on a loss of this Lancaster and her crew and they are looking for a photo of the Pilot Thomas Herbert Warne
The aircraft was Lancaster W4270 of 61 Sqn which flew out of Syerston on the 18th Feb 1943. The Pilot’s was called Thomas Herbert Warne, a canadian, aged 23 from Kennedy, Saskatchewan. His service number is R/102085,
W/O 2 T H Warne RCAF (Sgt at the time)
Sgt R J Preece
Sgt J Coaker
Sgt E J Loverock
Sgt J M Milton Whitehead
Sgt T R Newton
Sgt G A Hitchon
W4270 had an engine fire while on a training flight and crashed while near RAF Bottesford with the loss of all seven crewmen. It looks like they were a new crew for 61 Sqn and were training ready to start operations. Thomas Warne is buried in Newark-upon-trent cemetery,

Hi Andy, have found some of these records are online, there are 13 for the period that could relate to Lanc W4270, printed them off and they make fascinating reading, and you’re right they do give the codes for the Lancs…sadly looks like ours kept her nose down and avoided any combat during that time…or have they only put certain ones on the web index? Will certainly follow this up, thanks for the tip, Jack

I had the same problem with another 61 Squadron Lancaster LM 720. There was no record of her code letter in any of the books nor in 61 Squadrons ORB at Kew. I decided while I was at Kew to have a look at the combat records for that period and there it was QR-D. It gave Serial number,Code letter, Pilot and name of the gunner. It may be worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestion, we’ve got that and surprisingly enough even on there its only listed as W4270…I come to the conclusion it just didn’t have one…how odd.

I’ve just requested a Service Record from Library and Archives Canada and they acknowledged my request, by post, within 6 days (I am in England) However, turnaround time, I was advised, is now in the region of four months.

Lancaster pilot photo.
Hi Peter,
In the mess at RAF Syerston there is a picture that I’m sure was taken during
1943 of a Lancaster with squadron members all over it. I wonder if its worth
making contact with the resident Glider school which as a web site, and ask them to take a butchers at the sphoto to see if the names are below. I know
its a long shot, but hey whats the alternative ? Stricly Come Dancing.
Cheers JJ.

Not only might you strike it lucky with a photo of the person you are looking for but for no charge, they will also send you part of his service Record if they have it.
Orders if succesful can take up to a couple of months to be delivered though.
