Just had an email from a lady stating that she had been told of a wartime strip just N of Lee-on-Solent at SU 524 032.
She was told Spitfires flew from a rough grass strip here…seems unlikely given that Lee is only a mile or so to the south. However , I wonder if there may possibly have been use of the area(grassy fields) by liaison types (Auster/Taylorcraft/Piper cubs) in the pre D-Day times.
I have to admit surprise as I thought that I had probably nailed down any USAAF liaison strips in Hampshire….so …any ideas?

On top of the hill between Titchfield and Segenworth ( A27 ), just over the road from the Holiday Inn.
That was referred to in a novel but all that was there was a barrage balloon station.

R. Navy Fleetlands repair yard
No, it wasn’t far, but I’d think about putting money on the assumption that only helicopters and the odd Fieseler Storch would be able to operate from there.

Just a knee jerk thought, R. Navy Fleetlands repair yard isn’t too far away either!

Could she be thinking of activity at RNAS Gosport perhaps?
Maybe not Spitfires though, but with passage of time I am sure any single engine WW2 type would tend to be at risk of being remembered/described as “Spitfires”?
