Mhuxt – that’s the one. Wasn’t working too well last night but the bit you want is pages 660 and 661 of the Operations Record Book.
The text is a bit feint and fuzzy but (subject to me having transcribed it correctly) it lists the crew of C – ML748 as
F/O K N Davenport
F/O A N Crompton
F/O T J N Mitchell
F/O W G Done
Sgt J Naylor
Sgt N Taylor
W/O H N Morgan
W/O H L Webster
F/Sgt R J Brown
F/Sgt F G Hyland
S/Ldr R D J Baird
F/Sgt W G Dann
Sgt Naylor’s service number is 573499. He did deserve his Goldfish badge.
The mistake with the aircraft serial number is not that uncommon. I’ve seen errors in crew log books (confirmed by comparing with the rest of the crew) and even occasionally in the ORB and aircraft movement cards. Most likely explanation is often poor handwriting at some stage in the transciption.

The 461 Squadron ORB is online at:
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx
Click on “Search Now as a guest user”, type “461 Squadron” into the “Keywords (or name)” box, then click search.
82 records come up. Click display. You’ll see that some of them are digitised for online viewing.
Click on the one you want – make sure to choose “Enlarge”

hi thanks strange this i may have been given false info on the badge then? i wonder if sgt naylor raaf 461 sq actually did exist if he did did he go down in the sea?
By: Pondskater - 22nd July 2008 at 22:37
I’d concur with that – I think Richard has it. 🙂
I can’t get to the ORB at the moment but if I can tomorrow then I’ll look up the crew list for you and see if Sgt Naylor was on ML748.
Cheers

ML547 is not a Sunderland serial number.
The only 461 Sqn Sunderland that I have recorded as lost on 11.6.44 is ML748 UT-C of 461 Sqn RAAF which was damaged attempting to land at St. Mary’s, Scilly Isles. The crew was saved and the a/c sunk by RN guns.
“The Anzac Squadron” by Norman Ashworth p.174 refers:
“On 11th June (1944). Pilot Officer K Davenport and crew in Sunderland ML748 (UT-C) made an unsuccessful blind landing on the sea in heavy fog off the Scilly Isles after running short of fuel, having been diverted there because of bad weather at Pembroke Dock. The aircraft was seriously damaged due to the heavy swell. It lost its starboard float during the landing and had to be abandoned when it took on a “dangerous list”. The aircraft later turned over and had to be sunk by gunfire from the ASR vessel that had earlier picked up the crew.”
Sqn Ldr R D J Baird RAAF also recalled (My Ref FJ123B):
“11 June 1944. On of these trips with F/O Davenport, the aircraft was following 2 destroyers and 4 E boats for some 90 minutes South West of Brest, when damaged by enemy gunfire diverted and short of fuel force landed in very bad seas. Aircraft lost, ML748 crew picked up four hours later.”
I cannot identify another Q of 461 Sqn apart from ML781 which was delivered to 57MU on 8 Jun 44 and survived the war to serve with French Aeronavale. It was finally struck off charge 9 Dec 55.
ML762 of 228 Sqn RAF was lost on 10 Jun 44 Missing in action, failed to return from Biscay.

Nothing for this aircraft in June 1944.
However HMS Saladin did rescue survivors (no Naylor) from a No.461 Sqn Sunderland in March 1944.
