WW2 USAAF Radio Restoration

Hi All

As you all probably know by now, my L4 rebuild is aimed to be as authentic as possible. With this in mind, I’ve slowly been collecting parts to enable me to furnish the aircraft accordingly. I recently acquired an RCA AVT-15 Transmitter, of the type fitted to L4 and L5 Aerial Observation aircraft and thought some of you may be interested in its restoration. Its missing a few of its external parts and most of its internals. This for me is not a problem as these units are particularly heavy and with only 65Hp up the front, I’m trying to keep things as light as possible. I’ve already laboured a few hours stripping it down and cleaning, as well as trying to trace the remaining external items for its completion.

Eventually the unit will appear complete and yet be for static purposes only. I’m currently considering maybe using it as a crafty means of hiding a Gel Battery to power an ICOM radio and intercom however this is early days and I’m not going to concentrate too much on that until the time is right.

Much as I would love to keep all the original paint on this radio, as i wish the whole plane to appear stock and military fresh, she will be repainted accordingly with accurate colour matched paint. The front Facia will have to be refabricated as well as the correct mounts for the aeroplane (currently in desk mounted config and needs to be roof mounted).

I am however missing a few parts so have included a photo of a complete example for reference. if anybody has any parts that can help me complete, please get in touch.

I have managed to acquire a few spare radio equipment knobs and bits, so if anyone is interested please get in touch, or watch out in a week or two on ebay, where they will be advertised along with the next batch of my aviation collection sale.

Rgds

Does anyone have any good interior shots from an original 1944 ETO L4 Cub?

Or indeed any websites with colour scheme information preferably for a Cub that served post invasion of France?

Have googled but had much joy?

Any help much appreciated? -don’t mean to hijack the thread.

Thanks

Jason

Thanks Fouga

At least it shows someone is following my progress, thought if i kept this thread going long enough, someone would eventually write something in reply.

As it happens I’ve just finished a big bit of paperwork relating to the rebuild so it should be emerging in the CAA Regs shorlty. I’ll send some details to the editors of various magazines with a few details of what I’m trying to do….

Watch the Aviation Press in the New Year…..

A quick update. My RCA AVR-20 Receiver has now arrived, freshly imported from Canada. Its in beautiful (but slightly dirty) condition. Once cleaned It will have pride of place alongside the Transmitter. I’m currently colour matching the Transmitter case – more piccies to follow when its been painted.

For those that are interested, work is still progressing on my L4s AVT-15 Transmitter. I’ve sourced a number of parts (having only to substitute the filament holder for a later type – but only until I find an earlier example). A new facia has been made and the next stage is to prime and spray the box. A local company will colour match for me. Then comes the task of making some water decals to complete the Facia. In the meanwhile, i’m still on the hunt for the RCA non-linear Antenna Amperes Gauge, and a fuse holder. I’ve recently located a Receiver unit in Canada, hopefully I will be in possession soon.

Hopefully I will be able to replicate the L4 in the back of the latest Flypast, although I have noticed, they’ve modified a few items, and indeed are missing a couple of features from their L4 which i’ve still got fitted on mine!
