Hi,
My sons attend a school named after the WWII VC winner Leslie Manser, the school is housed on one of the old Skellingthorpe runways and they have some pictures they wish to identify.
Any help would be greatly appreciated:-

Looking again ….
I agree it’s a BE2e not at BE12a.
Apologies

Close, BE2e. The 12 had a bigger engine and intitialy was still double bay.
The BE2e Photograph with the “FE plane” in the background is reproduced in the Harleford “Reconnaissance and Bomber aircraft of the 1914-18 War” page 50.
The BE 12 was, of course, a single seater 🙂

Nigel
Bottom left BE12a (difffers from the latr BE12 and BE2 series by only having a single outer strut each side).

Background bottom left ?
William
I think that the small triangle (pyramid) above the tailplane points to this being an FE2, probably an FE2b.

Identification
Nigel
Starting from the top left and going clockwise, having looked at my ‘Putnams’ the aircraft are as follows –
Top left Armstrong Whitworth FK8 (this is an IWM photo ref MH3218)
Top right RE8
Bottom right Hawker Hind (K6741)
Bottom left BE12a (difffers from the latr BE12 and BE2 series by only having a single outer strut each side).
Regards
Chris

A cross-check of the serials confirms one of the RE8s as having been built by Austin motors, while the Hawker biplane is a Hind.
At first I thought the aircraft behind the BE2 was a Gunbus, but on closer inspection I reckon it’s a dH-1. Anyone else agree or beg to differ?

Info on the 50 Squadron Manchester on which Leslie Manser died is here http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=10035 – the three aircraft on the ground are either Re8’s or Be2’s, i’m not much of an expert, (I think the top two are of an Re8 and the bottom left is of a Be2) – the bottom right one is a Hawker biplane of some sort, a Hind, Hart or Audax at a guess
Edit – info on the same website for Lancaster KB768 here http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=2895
Cheers, Rob
