Well gang, I figured I’d put out some feelers here…
I have had in my possession, for over 20 years now, a collection of several hundred photos/documents which had belonged to my grandfather. I am hoping to assemble the collection into a photo journal/memoire type book but need some help identifying some of the locations in the photos.
My grandfater enlisted in 1915 and was posted to the 2nd Canadian Field Hospital and shipped to Egypt and then on to Lemnos Island for casualty clearance duties at Galipoli. I believe it was around 1917 that his unit moved into France and shortly afterward he transferred to the artillery (5th Canadian Siege Battery). Once in France he made many trips to visit family in Bromsgrove, and finally returned to Canada in early 1919.
A great deal of this material is fairly self explanitory, however, some shots defy any attempt I’ve made at identifying them. The following shots are a few sample I’ve what I’m looking at… the first 2 are at Galipoli (panorama of ‘the Sphinx’ and a view of one of the beaches, the 3rd is a partial view of Mudros Harbour on Lemnos. The last 2 are a couple of the difficult ones, although one does look like it may be Alexandria (judging by the boat in the mid-distance).
I’d greatly appreciate it if anyone has any ideas where I might be able to get some information/identification of these (and many more) – hopefully with the ability to do so eelectronically, as hopping across either pond really doesn’t enter into the equation at this time.
Many thanks,
James

Nice to see those photographs! My Father was in 3rd Bn AIF, and wounded in the attack on Lone Pine, 8th August 1915. Who knows your Grandfather and my Pa might have met.
The Gallipoli Association is a fine band of brothers and sisters – the web site is a little out of date, but the Association is very vigorous:

Cheers for that GA, wasn’t too sure how well it would go over without any aviation in the pics.

You’ve got a far better chance of an answer on the Historic Aviation forum.
