WWII airstrips in Essex

Can anyone help with some research?

I passed an RAF Memorial recently that was obviously on the edge of a wartime airstrip.

It is Parsonage Lane, Sawbridgeworth near Harlow, Essex.

Can anyone tell me who was based there and what planes flew.

I’d also like more information about what plane parts were made by Walter Lawrence in Sawbridgeworth during WWII.

Thanks in advance.

Being really pedantic….

The Essex/Herts boundary goes through the outskirts of Sawbo.

But you’re right the airstrip that I referred to IS in Herts.

Found one site that states that Walter Lawrence & Co produced Mossie Fuselages during the war.

Sawbridgeworth…

Hi;

There is a book called; Where the Lysanders Flew, which is a history of Sawbridgworth. Quite a good read apparently.

The company I work for has copies for sale…PM if interested…don’t want to blatently advertise here and all that!!

Regards;
Steve

Good little read Denis, I liked the bit about Doug Reich describing the guns accidentally going off and committing to 3-point landings. 🙂

Hello Ian,
Our little group was responsible for the memorial at Sawbridgeworth airfield. The airfield was originally called Mathams Wood ALG (air landing ground) and was in operation during WW2, in fact it’s origins go back to WW1. You can find out more by visiting my website at the bottom of this post.
Best regards,
Denis.

Hello Ian

Sawbridgeworth was an SOE (Special Operations Executive) airfield I believe. Westland Lysanders flew from there.

Go to Google earth and have a look. The perimiter track is still all there.
