Don’t be taken in by the pantomime; it is all part of the carefully orchestrated publicity generating machine. .

There you are, nail hit squarly on the head. All you need to do is ignore it. Don’t watch, don’t vote, don’t get involved and with luck, if everybody does that, this and all “reality” TV will vanish.

I set up this thread initially because I was angry that a great singer was kicked out (Moderator – sorry for the bad language, thanks for correcting it). But after reading everyones comments, especially PMN’s, and what’s being said on TV this morning, I have now come to terms with it and that it is just a show. It’s very easy to get lost in these programs but that is just what they are, entertainment programs. PMN has made some interesting comments and obviously speaks from experience.

Lucie will be a star I am sure of it and you don’t have to win the show to be a success. Look at ‘JLS’.

Let’s see who gets kicked off next week.

I’ve honestly been opened to more in music in the last few weeks simply from university. I’ve started playing percussion (drums), samba and djembe and were now composing our own 5 minute piece together …

Do all the contestants have to sign something to give away the rights to their auditions?

Because the show sometimes does a ‘worst of the worst’ compilation and then it must surely dawn on these acts that they are being publicly humiliated to a TV audience of millions and their dreams must be crushed…

…I can see somebody throwing themselves under a bus at some point.

The people taking part certainly won’t own the copyright to the songs they sing and won’t be paying the PRS fee for them to perform those songs (not that them paying the PRS fee would give them any rights anyway). They also won’t own the recordings of them actually performing, so they’ll have no rights to anything.

Again, they’re essentially being taken advantage of!

You can write songs, I’ve seen the videos on YouTube! I’m not a songwriter. I never have been and I probably never will be. The ideas I come up with in bands I play with are generally all related to arrangement, dynamics and placement of sound because that’s what I’m good at. That’s where my knowledge really shows, but that’s how a band should work; you should each bring what you know into it and what you produce is the sum total of what you all know (and that includes producers, engineers, etc). I understand tonal and rhythmic space and I understand how instruments should work together, and my background as a live sound engineer gives me a very in depth understanding of how to get a ‘full’ sound on stage, but I’m a crap writer. I really wish I could write, but I just don’t have that natural ability. I do have friends who are professional songwriters and they can literally turn it on and off as they want; if they want to write something, they just sit down and write it. I wish I could do that, but there are plenty of writers who don’t understand how to translate what they’ve written to a live performance, and some who have no idea how to even put a live performance together, let alone arrange sounds and instruments so they fit together. Again, a performance is generally the result of a ‘pool’ of knowledge.

I know you’re studying and that will put certain pressures on you and you’ll be required to do certain things, but don’t try too hard to write something if it just isn’t happening. You’ll only frustrate yourself, which admittedly can be positive as well as negative, but you might find once you stop trying, it will just happen. Maybe stop trying to think about writing and see if you have any random ideas. 🙂

Exactly, but again you can’t blame the people taking part for getting caught up in it. I understand entirely how crap some of these people are (I’ve spent thousands and thousands of hours practicing on a few different instruments and areas in music learning not to be crap) so I can see it (even though I’m also still actually crap), but the bigger picture isn’t about how good or crap they are. At least not in this case. As you rightly say, it’s about how much money the people behind it can make and the likes of Cowell are essentially taking advantage of the fact those taking part are ignorant to the bigger picture, hence my initial anger at you ostensibly wishing to see those people humiliated.

You don’t have to tell me that, I work in music and already know exactly how it works. I was just curious to know why you’d enjoy people being humiliated, but as it seems that isn’t the case, that’s fine.

I actually find the really bad acts difficult to watch…..I’ve literally had to leave the room sometimes…

…because standing on stage in front of an audience and singing or dancing is possibly my worst nightmare. I’ve got a lot of respect for those who have their dreams (and the courage to do it) but please couldn’t somebody tell the really talentless ones, the ones that are going to humiliate themselves, that they really shouldn’t put themselves through this…
