As of 17th Nov 2008:
The single has now raised a whopping £1million for charities Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
I sincerely hope our resident X Factor knockers read that little snippet of information!

It’s a business and like any other, it relies on a customer base.
I’m also a cynic, old shape, and I agree that altruism isn’t Simon Cowell’s driving force when he does things for worthy causes.
It isn’t the first time he has been involved in charity work on a large scale, so I can only respect the fact that he does, no matter what you consider his ulterior motives to be.
He isn’t forced to do anything charitable, but the fact remains that he does and in a bigger way than many other organisations do that could. So beat it down all you like, all I see is someone at least doing something worthwhile as well as making himself rich in the process.
That’s all I see. It’s easy that.
He probably genuinely gives a lot of his “Hard earned” to charity of his choosing, in his private life. But that won’t jerk the heart strings of the nation.

Knock the programme all you like, but why not give the producers a little praise for intentionally making a record for a worthy charity?
Whichever way you care to look at it, from a cynical or optimistic point of view, over a million quid has gone to a good cause because of it.
Maybe it’s also long past time to consider whether or not sending troops to far flung countries to fight unwinnable wars is a good idea?
OK, I can give the producers a little praise for that….but it’s beaten down by the fact that the producers main concern is ratings and viewer figures, so anything benevolent will do nicely.
Yes, more money to the appeal the better, no matter how clandestine the Altruism.

Soilders in the Army shouldnt be treated like crap anyway, i would reckon where the ONLY country in the world that the goverement dosnt treat the army with a Little Bit Of Respect.
About time we started treating out Army like the Americans do-Heros!!!
I think the general public largely respect and appreciate their armed forces; just look at the number of people lining the streets during a homecoming parade. Unlike ZaNuLabour, who showed their contempt for all things military by making Des Browne (aka Swiss Tony) part-time Defence Secretary.
‘Fraid I don’t know much about the X-Factor; Mrs C loves it, and I just try to smile at the right time. But if it’s raised a million quid for the Poppy appeal, or made even one of those screaming teenagers stop to think about things for a moment, then good luck to em.

People are buying the record because they either like it or they like somebody that is singing on it. Some will buy it as a collectors item. I doubt if more than 2 or 3% of the purchases has been made solely to give to the Poppy fund. So, we can still safely knock the programme with the confidence that we are correct.
