Can someone tell me whether the X-ray machines that scan your suitcases and bulky luggage are purely to stop bombs or are they also for stopping other illegal activities such as smuggling etc? Just wondered why if they dont use it for alcohol, drugs and cigarette smuggling etc.

The X-ray for passengers is only for metal objects (arms all sorts) and in some cases explosives. The X-ray for suitcases are for weapons and bombs.
No drug control by X-ray, since X-ray only detect metal objects. Sniffer dogs are used for drugs hunting as well as explosive hunting.
In the X-ray you don’t only see metal objects. Everything leaves a shadow, and it depends on the skill of the operator to interpret them. Other possibility is a computerized interpretation, but I have no idea how far such a technology is developed.
Affraid that you dirty money is detected on the way to Zurich? 😀
