XH558 emissions

Quick question about 558, when travelling to and from displays or what looks to be low power on, it usually emits a dark exhaust, why is this……unburnt fuel ?

Exactly that. Older engines aren’t efficient over their operating range, so inevitably they are a little rich through the range.
The F86 operated by Golden Apple is another example of this. Thankfully modern FADECs are much more intelligent and can monitor burn and deliver fuel much more efficiently.
