Have started a new thread – “XL391 support” to make life easier in tracking progress and interested forumites! 😀

Count me in as well jon details as per my pm

What sort of numbers are we talking in terms of forumites interested?

Viewing is absolutely essential as the e-bay pics were taken at angles that did not give all round coverage of the exterior.

Knowning XL391 as I do, the internal state is not good. When I looked at buying it, I made the decision that if I did I would strip inside and restore the external to A1.
Trust me inside is bad and you have to assume whats in there is scrapped and therefore you have to scratch build any items. Unless our current goverment would allow a restoration group strip one of the USA Vulcans for cockpit parts??
I hear the scrapy dropped the cockpit 3 times when scrpping it.

I for one would support the saving of XL391 nose, it has a personal attachment to me.

Where would it go? Those who worked on it must be insured to do so if on private propert – a museum as an example. This world is full of H&S issues these days.

I might be able to help having XL391 mounted as I have a spare rear craddle mounting stand that I might part with (costing nearly £2000) and I known of a front tressle that could be borrowed.

I wonder how recent the pictures on the ebay ad are? I would imagine that these were taken before she was smashed up as her hatch was open during her destruction. If we get anywhere, should we go for a viewing of it if that’s possible?
?

Also has anyone got any recent pictures that could be posted here from inside 391? I have a few but they were taken circa 1993…

I’d LOVE to help! Jon H, you on Merseyside?

Well near as dam it! After a recent move am now a merseysider living just inside the Cheshire border! 🙂

Though in case further clarification is needed am now also aware there is a “John H” on here as well – subtly different but not the same person. Apologies to JohnH if you are getting PM’s about 391!

Also keep those PM’s coming people. The list is steadily growing! 😀

Dave T / Wildcat, sorry for the negative waves!! My concern is not whether you all make a profit , or whether you do or don’t want anything out of it for yourselves, its more to do with the longevity of the Shack’s survival; hypothetically if the museum you are donating it to wants to dispose of it ,once donated they can do with it as they wish ;as a former aquisition & disposals officer (a grander title you could not wish for !!) with a registered museum I am familiar with the procedure, and have regrettably had to send things (aquired by the museum ) to the scrap. If on the other hand you retain title of ownership it will be your responsibility to move it . I think the group was formed for the right reason and as such your actions should be commended but we should all remember that the act of preservation by definition, never ends.

Stuart,

As one of the donaters to the shack funding request, I would like to backup Dave T ‘s posting.

I donated my amount in the full knowledge it was just that. I have no claim to any or part of the shack, nor do i expect ANYTHING in return, other than the personal pride I will feel in helping preserve something that others may view.

It was my way of doing something positive about the situation. Having spent many years as a member of the RAFM (Cosford Aerospace Museum as it was then), BAPC Rep for the aformentioned and since then an avid enthusiast and researcher I felt the project was one that required a litle help.

Should the same type of plan swing into place for XL391 I will be more than happy to do the same. After all said and done it is all to easy to sit back and moan about the state of aviation preservation when in fact for the same price as a day at a major air show or 2 or 3 Corgi diecasts we can make a small contribution and hopefully make a difference.

Negative attitudes will only bring negative results, and we have already lost far too many sole surviving and/or important airframes because of negativity.

I suppose this thread shows how there are people that do, people that dont, people that winge, people that winge and do, people that winge and dont and people who just plain criticise! Each and everyone of us know which group we belong to! ;o)

I am pleased to be in the Shack buying group. It is nice part-owning a bit of a big lump of Shackleton! The last aircraft type my grandad flew in service

With regards to a forum project, i’d REALLY love to be able to help out, but asides from being an ex CCF Flight Sergeant and an avid warbird spotter (both parafin burners and oversized desk fans lol) I have no skills to offer. Also as im a poor uni student so financially supporting a project would be a problem. However, i’d be more than willing to learn the basics of polishing and mackling to help out, even if it’s simply sweeping up. I’m sure we can all have a laugh! In April i’ll have my motorbike so will be able to travel to wherever help is needed. I’m free from wednesdays to sundays (oh that punishing university schedule lol). So yeh… if its needed ill help out!

I’m not 100% certain, but think the scrappers involved are Sandbach Car and Commercial Dismantlers of Moston Road, Elworth, Sandbach. Tel: 01270 763256

Thats also what i turned up after a few minutes on the internet! 😀

Though now just need a phone – currently in a computer server room doing some maintanance before anyone says anything! :p

That is unless someone else fancies calling them now…? If someone does then please PM me. Thanks.
