Phixer – It would have to be set in Vegas though with Dennis Hopper as the hypothetical Vulcan owner and someone like Keanu Reeves as the committed Vulcan enthusiast trying to save her from his lunatic grip ! Add that he (Hopper) wants to hang it in a new casino to be built on the site painted in USAAF markings and you have enough to boil the blood of most Vulcan affectionardo’s!

Perfectly admirable sentiments Jenny- unfortunately scrapmen know the price of everything and finding one that is sensible is a rarity ! One of the forum members
mentioned how he had offered the owner a deal years ago which would have meant scrapping the Vulcan. It would have saved the nose section and made restoration of it viable. Sadly it wasn’t to be.

Thanks david for your clarification on the meaning of (a good Farce) yes,I have to say the events surrounding the subsequent scrapping and other events you mention did make for dramatic and whimsical reading in part.So yes I can completly understand the context in which you were meaning.
The original thread mentioned (fickle enthusiam) which taken in the context of when the “going gets tough the tough get going” type senario… I was simply saying for my part that was not how it was for me personally.
It did not come to fruition, and for people such as myself it does not dampen my enthusiam and hope that yes I can become involved, and would be willing to step up to the plate…

Jenny – The Vulcan was initially bid to something like £15 million on EBay before they put an end to it. It was then sold to a landlord who clearly didn’t have much idea of the logistics of moving her and incurred a financial penalty for not doing so. After the legal action the council got involved and that put a hasty scrapping process in place.
Then the owner was subjected to various insults from enthusiasts whilst the scrapping process was underway – the same enthusiasts who hadn’t bought one from the RAF when they were available!
The nose section then was roughly handled by the scrapmen and put up for bids at a stupid figure. Now comes a well meaning enthusiast who manages to purchase items from her and subsequently feels a little ill ! A friendly G.P consultation and suddenly Code Red or something of that ilk errupts around him with the Police and BNFL examining his shed.
Whilst all this is going on the Vulcan nose travels round various scrapyards in Liverpool like a stray dog looking for someone to put the incredibly mildly glowing hulk out of her misery ! And the price is still 5K !
Now nobody seems to know where she is or indeed care!
And you find none of it mildly amusing ?

Olympus – ‘Deadly serious’ and the Vulcan in question must be a contradiction! It had all the elements of a good farce!
Well, that is your opinion David of which you are more than intitled to have, I am not in the habit of offering money for the “hell” of it.
Farce? well I dont claim to be in the avaition game, I’l leave that to people such as your-self, however if that is the kind of reaction trying to save something generates (a good farce) then it does not send out a very positive signal/image to others that may want to try to save and get involved with preservation, namely me “good old Joe Public”,after all It’s up to us all to make our own minds up about what is and what is not worth-while… 🙂 Of course it really does not matter anyway, it it went to the “Vulcan Hangar in the Sky” so that’s one less to worry about now… 🙂

Quite the opposite, I was deadly serious about this project, however as Jon said, escalating prices which seemed to take on a life of their own dependant on the mood of a scrap yard, coupled with a degree of sense and sensibility about the task and how viable it was, meant that no it didnt go ahead, that is not to say should such another nose, cockpit come into public view…the same people myself included would have no hesitation in stepping forward again.. I hope it does’nt come to this quite honestly, and that they do have secure homes indefinatly, but who can say what the future holds… 🙂

Attempts were made to save the nose but the high purchase costs (£5000 was the most recent figure) and an ever growing list of damage due to being moved round scrap yards put an end to the plan. 🙁
That said no one on here has enquired after it recently so the nose section may still be in existence…..??

Totally scrapped, the nose wasn’t saved
