Hi
Are any engine or taxi runs planned for vulcan xm603 at woodford.
It would be nice if this vulcan could have taxi days like xm655 and xl426.:)

Anyway, does anyone know why they can’t fix the nosewheel steering? Can a part not be obatined from a truly static example?

Well originally British Aerospace were quite enthusiatic towards the upkeep of the airframe even letting the guys at Woodford have the use of part of a hanger to help restore her…..
I think that the problem is these dats is the fact that they have to justify everything to shareholders and are unable to spend money on such a project which is a shame.
With todays redundancies at Woodford, the cancellation of the Bae 146/RJ aircraft and the problems with the Nimrod, I wonder how long this site will remain open???

No the vulcan was donated to woodford for display purposes why they painted it in the white colour i dont know?. However, it was subsequently used in plumbing trials for the k2 mod in late 1982. Hope this helps.

xm603
The current situation is that she now has all 4 engines working but unfortunately a few months ago her main wheel stearing snapped and she cant move but her systems are regularly run up every tuesday. Now for one of the rumours, is that she will be broke up and ferried to machester airport for the new viewing park that will be opened soon( that was from a guy that is involved in this) so maybe she will have a future abeit not in the air. Put it this way she is far in a way better off than the blackpool vulcan!!!!

BAE is just waiting for the old guys to die so they can scrap her; I was told as much by somebody at BAE.
What a waste if they dont want it then let a museum take it like they did with the saudi lightnings at warton.
Maybe the yorkshire air museum could by it and taxi it with the victor:) would love to see that.

I am totally unsurprised by that. It’s about time we took pride in the engineering achievements of Great Britain.
The Vulcan bomber is unique and a milestone in aviation. It annoys me that the company that built the thing can’t show a bit of pride in itself without instead, doffing thie caps to shareholders all the time.
This would never happen in America.
Paul.
….and also: When I lived in Wigan, I used to wite to them all the time asking if I could help to work on the Vulcan on my weekends off…….
Never got a single reply!

I doubt it unfortunately. At the last airshow I asked one of the ground crew and they said no because “it is an industrial site and the company strictly adhere to the health and safety at work act”.
The aircraft is probably taxiable but is not in as good a condition as the other live Vulcans. Work on this aircraft being sporadic.
The men who work on this aircraft are all getting rather old now and I can imagine that the aircraft will fall into disrepair when they stop looking after her, as the company don’t seem very interested in it and with access to the site being restricted, there will be no one else allowed to work on her…….
Whaddayareckon?
