Good news that time effort and money are being spent on XM603.
Still find it sad that the Avro Heritage collection has been stuffed in the former fire station buildings when a far better location would have been in one of the disused hangars. Really hope that fundraising and heritage lottery money can provide a roof over XM603 and hopefully other exhibits will follow.

I found them interesting; I hope we will see some further video updates.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but it seemed more appropriate than making a new one.

XM603 is apparently having a wash and brush up followed by a repaint with the help of the VTST team, and Neil Draper has posted a couple of time lapse videos on YouTube of the work so far (mainly the erection of the scaffolding and protective canopy). The second one is perhaps more interesting as it shows clearly the extent of the weathering.

Very good to see. Let’s face it, most of this forum thought she’d be a goner…

Thats really good to see. Although i was even more surprised to see that it was only twelve years ago that she last had all four engines turning and burning.

Thats a great shot, was it taken from the fence…..and if so what lens were you using ?

Thanks, it was a Nikon 70-300.

The RAF survey seems to differ from the opinion of the team who surveyed it in the past couple of years:

Or perhaps the RAF survey was purely to ascertain whether the airframe could be moved safely only?

I popped into the heritage centre last week and can confirm all of the above. I’ll make a separate thread about their overall plans but I believe a team from the RAF recently surveyed the aircraft and all that was needed was new tires which are currently being sourced. That said the plan is to jack it up onto bogies of some sort I believe before towing as to not strain the undercarriage.

From what I remember from way back when they was something wrong with the nose leg?

Great news though for what seemed a doomed airframe.

Is that jack ‘stored’ under the wing or is it ‘doing its job’? And if so, why only one and so far out?

When I visited, about a year ago, the jacks were stored just behind the wing, which it appears to still be (though there were four of them then). The two bar was also still under the starboard wing.

Vulcan for AHC?

Well, besides the aforementioned jack there’s a darned great towing arm under the RH wing.

I wonder if they’re getting things prepared to move her?:)
