XS458

Hi

Has anyone got any idea how often XS458 taxis at Cranfeild ?

Would be nice to see a Lightning T5 taxi not just the 2 F6 at Brunty.

peter & bocar

Please be careful or you will incur the wrath of jb154 as I did. πŸ˜€

peter, what about asking the guys at Bruntingthorpe. I believe that they have two ‘live’ Lightnings. Maybe they can give you advice on the supply of AVPIN.

hi peter unfortunately there is not any other way then avpin but i am working to find out if there is any avpin in europe but i expect it will be extremely expensive if there is. i myself just back from batanica in serbia filming mig29s, mig21s, oraos, super galebs, jastrebs, galebs and mil8s.
this saturday if it is a calm day we will be jacking 458 up with the undercarriage jacks and doing rotractions i think we are the only lightning that does this in the country rmc

Hello Bocar thanks for the update. There surely must be some way other than using avpin to start it?

alive and kicking xs458

hello to you all long time since i have posted 458 is very much alive with 10 high speed runs and 9 stactic reheats in 2006, other events are that she has been completed resprayed and lacquer in markings of 92sqn port with tail cobra 111sqn starboard, also we have refitted fuelling probe and made film with martin shaw the actor being filmed having a high speed run for sky. this may be our last year that we run 458 as we have exhausted our supply of avpin with no other sources of supply available we may have no other option rmc

AVPIN

mjr

I don’t see the problem. If AVPIN is acquired legally, to be used legally in a legally owned aircraft, where does the problem lie?? Also I have no doubt that those who hold AVPIN for use in aircraft also have it stored correctly and securely in accordance with HAZCHEM regulations. Therefore the local plod will have no problems with it. πŸ™‚

Sunshine.
AVPIN is a controlled substance you are NOT allowd to have it in any quantity in excess of 500ml as an ignition enhanser for home brew model aero engine fuel.
It detonates at 5,000 meters per second is of moderate yeald.
Vapour is toxic and lethal above the cumulative equivalent of 4% for an hour.
HSE will not allow individuals acces to this subatence.
You have no business messing arround with it whatsoever, or the engines it is intended to start!!!!
Get mjr’s point yet DH

rmc……320psi

I don’t know if this is of any help…but try this site

www.chemexper.com

them put 1712-64-7 in the search field and it comes up with a list of AVPIN suppliers.

What starting system does XS458 use to start the Avons? I seem to remember that in my day AVPIN starters were used. Is AVPIN still readily available or has it been converted to electric starters?

LPG??
not the happy chappies up north a bit I hope.
Some sadistic sod, from RR I presume, fed one (a 302) a shovel full of nuts and bolts just to see what would happen and the bloody thing kept on for over half an hour at 65% then quit rather suddenly, well wouldnt you.
Honest seen the video, well it was film in those days, so Avons would run well on (the) LPG!!! cheaper than JP too.
That donk is nearly as ruged as a Spey I should say.

Pretty Bullet proof alright, but HOW bullet proof? maybe a test is in order, see if it would go from 0-60,000ft, and how quickly, on C3H7N03, without blowing itself to pieces. :diablo:

barking mad,

forget the back yard, tax it and park it on the road, Im sure the neighbours wouldn’t mind!! πŸ˜€

ps, only had to drill out 6 screws from the leading edges in the end. Not bad!

That’s a point the way the cost of diesel is going it will soon be competitive!!

What Taxation class would it come under?

Insurance as a road vehicle would be a lot less than an aircraft.

If rally cars can take to the air without the CAA getting all het up perhaps that’s where we have been going wrong, mmmmmmmm.
So its an off-road vehicle then taxed and insured road legal. With a tendency to take BIG jumps, off the road.

Have I missed something here!!!

Hmm, keeping it clean is a pain in the a@”se, musn’t complain though, we get away with 2 big washes a year, and a polish every other.
