Hi
I own a Let C.11 serial 171312 registered G-BTZE which is currently being restored to full flying condition.
I am now wanting to finalise a colour scheme for the 11. As a former Czech Airforce machine, my preference is a genuine Czech scheme for a C.11, however the standard schemes, so far as I know, were either all-over grey/blue or all over grey, with Czech roundels in either case. Whilst authentic, neither scheme is particularly attractive…
Does anyone have any pictures or graphics for any genuine Czech C.11 service camouflage schemes that they would be willing to post here or email to me?
If not, my 2nd port of call will be any genuine Czech Yak or Lavochkin camouflage schemes.
Lastly, any genuine VVS Yak 11 camouflage schemes.
For any of the above, I am going to need some kind of historical evidence to present to the UK CAA to justify the aircraft flying in the colour scheme without needing to exhibit UK registration markings, so some publication or photos of some description would be really helpful.
I hope someone out there can help or point me in the right direction. Many thanks to all in advance.
Best regards
Southern Cross.

Modelling the VVS
Dear NII VVS,
Thanks for your reply (and thanks to everyone else as well for the time taken to reply). I had already found your website and read the many articles on it. I have been trying to use the contact page on the website but I could not get it to work. I will PM you instead.
I was aware that the scheme that OK-JZE currently flies is a Czech Lavochkin scheme where the original VVS stars were replaced with Czech roundels. The aircraft looks very nice in that scheme.
Regards to all

I wrote an article on our website about the Yak-11 and its colouration. It might be worth a read if you’ve not seen it:

The above photograph of the green C.11 is interesting. Such a finish is not mentioned in the article, and I cannot say whether this was originally authentic, or not. I was able to locate documentation only for the grey scheme, as seen on “1706”, but admittedly I am no expert on Czech AF practices.
Cheers

There’s a few interesting East-German schemes on the Wings Palette site here:

…particularly the all red scheme

I found this photograph after all…
Forget about the camouflage!
Simply replicate this eye-catching scheme and substitute the Czech registration for the UK one.

Why not try a Czech civilian scheme similar to Yak-11 ‘OK-KIO’ as preserved at the Monino Muzeum, Moscow.
The scheme was (in equal parts) top fuselage in red, mid fuselage in white and lower fuselage and wing root in black. It had sunburst pattern wings in the same colours. Tail and fin also sunburst. Registration in black lettering over the white portion of the rear fuselage. Spinner and cockpit framing were either silver of natural metal.
No photo’s I can post unfortunately, but a google image search of ‘OK-KIO’ should bring you a photo.
Good Luck.

I have a number of Yak-11 publications at home. Can easily let you borrow them. Have sent an email.

Hi Yak 11 Fan
The restoration is going very well, thanks very much. As you probably know, the aircraft was a former Czech Air Force machine, then Skoda aerobatic team, and then it languished in Czechoslovakia until ending up at PPS. So it was complete, low hours and unmolested. Matching panels etc.
Nonetheless it has had a full strip down. Everything was in excellent condition, a few minor repairs, but nothing serious. So it is now being re-assembled. The engine and prop are both being fully overhauled. It will retain original everything, from radios (I will have modern comms as well though), to RDF, instrumentation, machine gun, systems etc etc. We have retained the original loom for example which has been restored and re-fitted using period materials and methods.
Timeframe: well lets just say that I hope it will be flying in the UK by early summer.
I hope the colour scheme can do it justice, so anything interesting that you have would be gratefully considered.
I have seen the “Modelling the Aircraft of the Soviet VVS” website. It has a couple of possibilities, but no period photos and their website does not allow me to ask questions of them directly.
All the best

I always liked the look of the civilian scheme that your aircraft wore when it last flew, other than that I am very biased towards the white La7 scheme but then again that has already been done. I will see what I can find at home. How is the restoration coming along?
