Yak-11 in Kansas City (2005 Zombie thread)

Today my friend Bob Chinnery’s Yak-11 arrived at my hanger to begin final assembly and prepare for her first flight. Although my camera battery was failing I did manage to get a few snaps. More to follow soon.

That single seat configuration looks a lot like a Yak 7 doesn’t it.

Will, isn’t the original militairy stock configuration of the Yak 11 with that spinner?

J.V.

With the spinner it has a more ‘stock’ look for a Yak C11, I think the modified version with a single cockpit and no spinner is represenatative of some of the earlier radial engined Yak fighters. I suppose my liking for the version without the spinner is more on aesthetic grounds (pesky design students, what do they know 😀 ), and that it was how I first say it at a damp, wet ‘legends a few years ago.

Yes, the Yak-11 does have a spinner. It’s a NOS spinner for a Constellation.

Random link… some interesting Yak images here, probably of more use if you can read the Russian text. 🙂

Looks superb with the wings on, I can’t wait to see the flying pictures. Will the propeller have a spinner? It is interesting how the similarly re-engined (but single seat, a regular at legends) French example changes in character when the spinner is added….

I prefer it in its earlier spinnerless incarnation, see pics borrowed from airliners.net,

Looks like the first flight of the Yak will be sometime within the next few weeks. The wing is now attached, and the pneumatic, hydraulic, and fuel systems will soon be operational. The prop should be installed next week, then ground runs can begin.

Stay tuned for further updates as we near a first flight…

Hi TJ

I am 5,000 miles from my files so I can’t look it up

Really John, can’t you be trusted to come up with anything? Even though you’re just down the street… Disappointing.. 😉 😀

Gents

Yes 41 Yaks were extracated from the Egyptian store yard along with around 80 tons of spares. Most were relatively low timed airframes due to the fact they didn’t operate well in the hot conditions and consequently didn’t see much service, apart from the occasional recce along the Israeli border.
There was an artilce on their recovery in an old WWW, and I have just done a five part series on all the Yak fighters for ‘Classic Wings’, the latest features the stock Yak 11s and those heavily modified for Reno racing.

I remember seeing photos of the Yaks in Egypt parked in a huge yard and it was wall to wall – what a site.

Wasn’t there an article with some photos of the Egyptian yard in Warbirds Worldwide back in time?

Hi Melve

Warm up a seat at Potsdam or wherever it is you sit – serious slagging off needs to be done when I go to Leg Ends – I have taken notes and am up to 3 exercise books of acidic comments that need to be made. Very happy the Rewind Clobbermiester flies – proud little lad you must be.

Now to Yak 11s – yes this was a HUGE effort getting 30 plus Yaks and sundry other bits out of there and yes it was our French bretheran who did it – in terms of scale it was easily as large as the Iraq sea/Fury effort I think most of them are dispersed now all over the world – we even have one in Australia. I suggest that Dave McDonald should hop in here as he has just penned a fantastic series in Classic Wings on the Yaks and must be some sort of a subject guru by now. I remember seeing photos of the Yaks in Egypt parked in a huge yard and it was wall to wall – what a site.

Most of the Yak 11s around came out of Egypt via La Ferte Alais and Jean Salis.

What’s the knurled knob coming straight out at the top of the panel? Looks like a health and safety issue 🙂

Bob Chinnery said that this plane came out of Egypt with several other Yak-11s, he thought maybe to a French buyer. John Garric bought maybe 5 or 6, and Bob purchased one, around 1987. The project came with two original engines, which Bob sold to Kermit Weeks, after a recommendation from Steve Hinton to install the P&W R1830-75.

Bob has some photographs of when he first got the project, and I’ll try to get some scanned. You can still see the Egyptian roundels on the wings, but the plane was a real basket case.

Very nice. Any idea where it comes from?

I’ll ask Bob today, but if I remember correctly he purchased her around 1980 from John Garric, the guy who does the Yak-3 conversions with the Allisons.

As I recall he had several Yak-11 projects for sale at the time. I believe a complete airplane was around $50K.
