Just found this over on the WIX. The Yankee Air Museum had a major hangar fire tonight. Word is the B-17, B-25, and C-47 were saved.

I hope no one will again argue that we already have such-n-such an airframe in preservation, so why should we preserve more than one of something. Accidents (and lets hope it is an accident) do happen.

Lets hope it doesn’t take too long for the funds to be raised to rebuild the hanger.
Our thoughts are with those that work there, sad to lose not only some of the aircraft but the various artefacts etc inside the hanger.
Regards,
Snaps

Fortunately, several aircraft were rescued from the hangar, including the B-17, B-25 and the C-47. See http://www.localhangar.com/cgi-bin/clubs/club_home.pl?CLUBNO=3.

This is very sad, there was also a cracking WACO CG-4 glider project in there, and the museum section was stacked high with many treasures. But thanks heavens Yankee Lady & the rest survived. Fire is the greatest enemy of aircraft museums.

It sounds like the hangar is a total loss. The museum and library are gone. Thankfully nobody was hurt in the fire. According to the other board, a F-105, C-60, L-39, YOV-10 and some homebuilts were lost.

terrible news…update
Saw footage on detroit news tonight fortunately they were able to save the three main aircraft. Very sad to see a wall of fire with the B52 and some 60s jets silouetted in front of it.
from wix :
First off , nobody was hurt in the fire. The B-17, B-25, C-47, AT-11 (not in the building), and V-77(offsite at the time), are safe.
The F-105, C-60, YOV-10A, L-39C, “Flying Flea” Replica, Blackbird homebuilt, and Benson Gyrocopter were all distroyed the the fire. There is NOTHING left of the hanger, the Museum, the Library and all the Artifacts are gone…
Thankfully there were members still around and they were able to remove the B-17, C-47, and B-25 from the hangar.
This is a huge blow to the Yankee Air Museum.
