Dose anyone know about the Yankee Zephyr?
It was a US Navy DC-3 Cargo plane that dropped off the radar during a flight between New Guinea and New Zealand in 1944.
I was wondering if it was ever found as I have come across a picture of the Yankee Zephyr after it was salvaged and I was wondering if the picture was legit..
Further information accompanying the photo was the YZ was restored..
The information came from the renownd Ross Macpherson archive collection.

Hehehehe :diablo: The “Yankee Zephyr”, as far as I know, existed solely as part of the film “The Race for the Yankee Zephyr”, made here in NZ during the early 1980s. Directed by David Hemmings, starring Ken Wahl, Donald Pleasence and
George Peppard, music by Brian May.A great cheesy adventure flick with some terrific helicopter flying sequences, but I’m fairly sure no real C-47 was lost without trace carrying gold bullion and whisky!
The Yankee Zephyr was portrayed by a real DC-3, repainted in USAAF colours and sunk in Lake Wakitipu near Queenstown. For filming it was then raised. I saw a print of the aircraft on a local auction website claiming it was a WW2 pic!
yes i know the movie, but aparantly there was a YZ and it went missing.
Question being, Was it found as the picture I looked at claims it was found and restored. there is No mention of this anywhere on the web so far and you would have thought something would be mentioned with the gold as such so i thought i would ask around to see if anyone knew the full story or could confirm the picture..
