Yeovilton's SHARs

No shortage of Sea Harriers at Yeovilton yesterday, with the FRS.1 / 2 next to the Wessex in the museum, another one inside on the ski-jump, one on the gate, another one looked like it was over near the Historic Flight hangar AND these three basking in the sunshine.

Here’s a slightly closer pic of the line-up.

I have to say that on the day seeing these parked outside, the active Sea Vixen and Skyraider out on the pan and the Historic Flight Sea Fury parked over on the other side outside its hangar was a fantastic reminder of the Royal Navy’s fixed wing heritage.

Shame no more mk1 SHARS exist as they look better than the FA2……

There is an FRS.1-lookalike in the Museum, cobbled together from a GR.3 airframe and the nose section from a ditched SHar.

I wonder what their plans are for the phantom as they already have one of the prototype K’s on the carrier deck?

Thanks for the pic.

Just to clear up any confusion with the stored aircraft on the old Harrier tie down behind the museum, the 2 Sea Harrier F/A2’s and the Phantom are owned by the MOD and at some point someone will decide their fate, the Harrier T8 as of the week before this years Air Day is now part of the FAAM collection and once an issue with the nose oleo has been sorted will be towed across to Cobham Hall.

Ahh ok. The chap i was with was going for a flight in the PP with John Beattie, so i presumed they were still owned by Kennet.

Its the Kennet Aviation Piston Provost. They also operate the Jet Provost and Skyraider that were also there on Thursday.

Rob

The Piston and Jet Provosts are NOT owned by Kennet and haven’t been for many years now. They’re privately owned and kept at VL…..until they’re sold (see Pilot magazine this month)…:apologetic:

What’s the silver with yellow T Bands tail dragger on the left? Looks like a Provost but my eyes are old and I need new glasses

Pretty sure the ones pictured were put out for static display at Air Day last weekend, along with that Phantom.

I think I counted 13 harriers, (mostly SHARs) at Culdrose recently too.

Nice to see we still have a few.

What are they used for?
