Your chance to see a comet in the sky

OK I may have caught your attention, but this one is for those who may be vaguely interested……..yes I know this is an aviation thread, but I am also an amateur astronomer.:diablo: 😀

Comet P17Holmes(yes that’s its name:D )is not normally visible to the naked eye “exploded” about 5 days ago & can now be seen in the NNE about an hour after sunset.Although naked eye visible,it looks its best in a pair of binoculars.(If you want any more details,a number of astronomy web sites have maps giving details-it is in the constellation of Perseus.)

😉 😉 Right I will start talking aviation again now……..enjoy.;) 😉

Saw it Tuesday and Wednesday nights, barely visible to the naked eye. Saw it much better Wednesday night through a 10×30 Little Mak monocular. A patch of fuzzy bluish-white light, like a star seen through a cirrus cloud. Even the modest power of the 10×30 made a lot more stars visible. Too bad I didn’t have a skyglow filter to go with it.

No luck Thursday due to advance clouds of a front rolling in. But there was a nice consolation prize, a bright meteor (from outer space, not Gloster).

Saw it quite nicely tonight. No tail, just a fuzzy spot.

It’s moving slowly so no spotting tips other than it is high in the sky:D

it’s a naked-eye object even from a well-lit suburb. Draw a line from the Pole Star to the Pleiades, and then search about half-way along with a pair of moderate-power bincoluars such as 7×50, and you should find it easily enough. Pretty well exactly overhead at midnight, btw.

I have to looks for this when its Clear 😀 On the Topic of Space I am sure I see Mars at round about midnight with either Venus or Mercury . And can we see Jupiter or Saturn with the Naked eye?

I am also into Space wish I could be the first Man on Mars or Saturn but the fear of dying come back to earth will come to my mind 😀
