So what are people’s favourite squadrons?
Mine:
69 Sqn “Hammers” IDF/AF
Currently equipped with F-15I, but it’s really their exploits as one of the first Israeli F-4 units that inspires the imagination.
101 Sqn “First Combat” IDF/AF
First Israeli combat unit, initially equipped wth Avia S.199’s (Czech Bf 109s). Scored Israel’s first kills, despite S-199 being an absolute dog of an aircraft.
Currently flies F-16C Fighting Falcon.
VF-84 “Jolly Rogers,” USN
Mainly like the look of their tail markings, especially on the classic F-14 Tomcat. Plus they were in the Final Countdown
Squadron logo since transferred to VFA-103 (formerly the Sluggers) equipped with F/A-18F but it just doesn’t look as cool as the F-14.
1 Reconnaissance Squadron, USAF
Oldest squadron in USAF (1 Aero Squadron formed in 1913. Started off as observation, ended up as a bomber squadron in WWII then back to recce.
At one stage flew the fastest operational aircraft in USAF service, the mighty SR-71 Blackbird.
Currently a U-2 training squadron equipped with TU-2S and T-38.
Jagdverband 44, Luftwaffe (WWII)
An Me-262 unit whose pilots were the most decorated of the war. Included Adolf Galland. The top 5 aces in the unit had a combined tally of over 1,000 confirmed kills.
I doubt there will ever be such an elite formation.
Imagine transposing such a unit of talented fighter aces onto an F-22! :dev2:
