Your favourite tyrant, despot, dictator and mass murdering world leaders, please!

Lets have a list of tyrants, despots, dictators and other generally not very pleasant world leaders from the last 100 years and/or history.
Maybe you can rank your list by just how murderous they were. Since I’ve just found a top ten that didn’t have Mao on it I shall declare that this will be an equal opportunities list – there is room for both left and right wing evil guys (and if you can find any who were from the middle ground I’d be happy to hear about them). One more thing: let’s not have them if they’ve been fairly and squarely voted into office – that means you if you are going to type in for Obama; it isn’t very funny and just shows what sort of bigot you are. No popes either, unless you are really going to argue for them.

Ok, do your worst.

Ferdinand Marcos.

Nice, although I would have had him down more as an embezzler, a corrupt leader. We could place Suharto of Indonesia in the same bracket – yes, people died due to their political views, but the leaders and their cronies stashed billions in their Swiss bank accounts and their wives had thousands of shoes to show for it…

May I be so bold as to throw Colonel Gaddafi into the hat?

Besides the ever popular rhyming slang association with ‘The NAFFI’, he had touch of the Charlie Sheene ‘winning’ about him.

The voting was a little one sided, all those nice young men in their brown shirts and red arm bands assisting those who were not totally sure where to put their mark surely made some difference…

That’s quite true – so he does. I had missed that. Mind you the key word is “fairly” isn’t it? Communists and Social Democrats were suppressed in the 1933 election and of course banned from the Kroll Opera House chamber when the Enabling Act was passed effectively creating Hitler a dictator in all but name.

Indeed he was, but for some odd reason the OP discounts fairly and squarely voted into office which he was.

Hitler falls into two of the categories, surely. Tyrant and mass murdering world leader.

According to the OP Hitler does not qualify as he was elected by the people…then turned nasty.

Good tyrants all gone? Try adding a few bad ones!!!

By good I meant historically meaty.
Come on, Hitler was a genocidal f**k head but he does make great TV. The Hitler, sorry History channel is pretty much devoted to him.
There is probably not one member of this forum that doesn’t have a book which relates to Hitler or the Second World War in some way.
Two Lancasters?
As I read in one book `War makes damn good reading`.
Yes the second world war was terrible, but in some way we are enriched by it.

Meanwhile, I forgot to add Oliver Cromwell to the list.

At the risk of upsetting some religious folk (NO OFFENCE MEANT BY THE FOLLOWING!) on the forum. I nominate GOD! with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, he has obviously since time immortal has allowed us to Murder/Kill/Maim/Torture/Rape etc.etc. To all humans no matter what age/To animals/To the planet as a whole, although you could argue in his defence that he gave us free will and it is us that are in charge of our own actions ? But at the same time would you sit and let a Woman/Child/Animal be raped/Beaten/Killed etc etc in front of you all in the name of fun or whatever reason those who commit these acts give for their depraved actions ?
I am sure if you wouldn’t let this happen then it begs the question why does GOD let it ?

Because…(deep breath) there is no such thing as god and. anyway, which countries were it/they the leader of, exactly? Ok, some may have implied that they were doing god’s work…but they have been the ones remembered for their actions – not their invisible friend.

I know, it’s a cheap gag. To be honest all the good Tarrants, I mean tyrants have been done already.

Geoff

I think it’s the OP’s way of asking which of those fitting his criteria we favour as the most despicable.

RE 30

Geoff,

‘God’ doesn’t ‘do’ anything. If the Deity exists it is merely as a facilitator. His creation is people. They perpetrate the acts of which you rightly complain according to the possession of free will.

There is no one to blame apart from people. Whatever else they bring; peace, compassion, tranquillity, scientific discovery, they bring also devastation in many forms.

All of this can be summarised as the – for all we know – eternal battle between good and evil.

Hi All,
I am sorry I seem to have got the wrong end of the stick in this thread I mean who would actually have a favourite ? I have what I consider to be a good sense of humour and just like opinions every body should have one except not all can see the funny side of yours.

certainly does not qualify as any sort of murdering despot in the OPs query.

Neither was Thatcher, so I thought the thread could use some balance. 😀

Clement Attlee.

From what he had to start with, the most effective PM in recent times by far, achieved a great deal with a bankrupt economy and moving from a war to a peace time economy, but certainly does not qualify as any sort of murdering despot in the OPs query.
