Thinking back to August 1960 close to my 10th birthday i recall my first flight.
My uncle a carpenter who earned good money knew of my love of a/c. As he and his wife holidayed in N. Ireland each year on my 10th birthday i was invited to fly out and stop over for 1 night then home alone.
We left Elmdon on BEA Viscount G-AMOF on Saturday, quite turbulent, it was air pockets as the stewardess explained.
On arrival at Belfast Nutts Corner the first thing i noticed through the window was dozens of hares running about. When we had parked up I went onto the pan to take some photos with my Brownie 127, I got the Viscount and on the other side of the pan BEA DC3 and Bristol Freighters.
I was cautioned by the staff ” Dont walk under the wings you will get oil on you”
The following Sunday morning i was put on the return flight to Elmdon however this was via Ringway so another take off landing
This confirmed my love of flying. God bless Uncle Bill & Auntie Edna.
My next flight was 3 years later in a Euravia Constellation Luton to Perpignan.
What about you???

Air Experience flight in the RAF 1971, should have been in an Andover or similar, but either unserviceability or too many airman at Swinderby, whatever, enabled me to have my first flight in a 42 Squadron Nimrod when I was posted to RAF St Mawgan. Think I got the better deal in the end, a lovely power experience and long duration made it for me, plus was allowed on to the flight deck at night to watch the UK towns and cities from a great height.

DH Heron, Jersey Airlines from Southhampton – Guernsey in 1958. 8 years old.
I was very impressed that Airfix kits in Guernsey were only 1 shilling and 10 pence and not 2 shillings like back home! Bought the Antarctic Survey Auster kit and built it as the floatplane version. Also spent a lot of time crawling into old German bunkers but found nothing.
Wish I could remember other things just as well!:(

Mine was in a Dragon Rapide, of Island Air Services in about 1958 from Heathrow, though then, it was just called London Airport. I.A.S. operated 3 Rapides, giving joyrides from where Terminal 1 is now, at 7/6d a time.

seven Grumman Mallards. Seven? I wouldn’t believe it now, but it’s there in my handwriting from the time!
I would say seven Albatrosses of the Italian air force? THey had a whole fleet of them at the time…

No. Neither does leaping off a shed in a Superman cape.:)
Does leaping off the balcony at the tender age of five holding my big brother’s 1/48 scale Avro Lancaster above my head, which I then released to have it smash into tiny pieces count? My brother hated me for ages because of that. 🙁
First flight; Auckland to Sydney on a Continental Airlines DC-10. Lancasters, Rapides, Heralds; Boy, you guys are showing your age…
Oh, and Stuart H; it’s 668, the Neighbour of the Beast, according to Bill Bailey.:dev2:
