Your loudest aircraft?

The EAP prototype at farnborough many moons ago was easily the most deafening a/c I’ve ever heard – what’s yours?

Loudest… that must be Antonov An-22 landing on Amsterdam airport sometime in the late ’90s I think. The airport got a record amount of complaints then and the type was instantly banned from Dutch airspace, if I remember correctly.
Man those four contra turbo props were totally awesome. I used to live a good 25 miles from the airport (so the plane was still fairly high) and the windows were shaking for several minutes! That was landing too. Can’t imagine what full power must sound like…

Bunch of German Tornados and Phantoms leaving the RIAT was load too, but not terribly exciting perhaps 🙂

And the Tu-22M the same year wasn’t terribly loud (as it didn’t leave that day) but was definitely my most unhealthy aircraft encounter in terms of exhaust fumes. I wouldn’t be surprised to get lung cancer in the future from inhaling all those terribly smelly and hot half burnt Ukranian kerosene fumes for over half an hour. I am sure a lot of you will remember…

A formation of Fouga Magisters taxying on the ground – the ear-piercing shrill of the Belgian Red Devils and Patrouille de France when they operated the type.

We went up to Coningsby to see the BBMF during my jaunt to the UK in 2000 and they had the blue Spitfire (a Mk 18?) outside doing run ups….they went to full throttle on it (at least I have to assume they did!) and it was just so incredibly LOUD!! Everyone had their hands over their ears and I pitied the poor ramp rats sitting on the tail feathers to keep her ass end on the ground, what they must be going through…..but was a magnificent sound!

Great stuff…

Mine would the Tornado… especially during engine start and run up to full power with the HAS doors closed….(9 Sqn, Honington 1984)

Or a MK XIV Spit…when you are crouching down in front of the main wheels to remove the chocks….well its really music…not noise…

Same for Concorde….sheer bliss….B1s fall into the same category..

I go to RIAT, to see the B1B Lancer especially…. and have so for the last 6 years…
Chivalry is not dead… and if the two guys who let me into their place so that I could set up my camera equipment read this…. just wanna say thanks! See you there this year! She hit “rotate” just about where I was and the noise was awesome, deafening and just fabulous….spectacular aircraft… one of my favourites…

How about 4 J-79’s lighting off for take off on a B-58 Hustler, now that’s loud. But what’s really loud is 4 B-58’s taking off one right behind the other!

No question, after 50 years of airshows it has to be the Lightning, poor old thing, welcome to Thundercity where these beasts are understood and loved.

Vulcan K2 from 50 Sqn doing a recruit graduation flypast at Swinderby in December 1983. I was 2 weeks into training there and standing outside the Cinema there when the aircraft came over throttled right back (you could hear the airflow over the airframe). That was until he reached the road that spilt the camp. Full Power!!, pull back on the stick !!! Instant Earthquake!!!!

Phantom FGR2 summer night flying at Wattisham in 1991 (0200 hours, the aircraft woke you up, the car alarms kept you awake).

B1B at Mildenhall some time between 1996 and 1998 (I cannot rember which one). High Speed pass – watch those car alarms go off.

Olympus 320 for the TSR.2 then?

Correct… 😀

On the 3rd December 1962, the aircraft was completly destroyed by a massive fire following a engine explosion on the ground.

A Vulcan was used to test the Olympus for Concorde, wasn’t it? Although I’m guessing it probably didn’t remain under the Vulcan for quite long enough to appear at that show 😀 Maybe the RB199 for the Tornado?

Warm……. 😀

For me the SR/71 but my father reckons 9 Lightnings at Farnboro in the 60’s was unbeatable as the compression stopped him from breathing.

My Dad was there too….he even managed to get a press pass.. 😎

He remembers he couldn’t get a picture of the Lightnings taking off as he had to cover his ears with both hands. However, he did manage this one of Vulcan XA894 just before it blew him over…….

Note the attached ‘extra’ engines….anyone guess what they were..

Those Lightnings can be seen in the second Mossy pic lined up in the background.

Either…..

Being over flown by a Tornado at night, thats the problem with driving in northern Scotland at night, headlights standout from miles away!

or…..

The B-1B high speed flyby at Mildenhall in 2000.

I THINK that i was there at that time SOC, it was a RIAT sometime… ill get back to you with the year. My GOD that was loud, knocked over several stalls from what i remember..

All I remember is that it was between 1989-1992. I remember the B-1B taking off, and disappearing, and then I think the Vulcan did it’s display. Then the B-1B reappeared without warning and made it’s pass right down the length of the runway, which I was standing way too close to.

airshow at RAF Finningly when i was an air cadet (very many moons ago), we were doing F.O.D patrol on the grass about half way between the crowdline and runway, and the vulcans took off. one at the end of the runway just lifting off, one half way down (and level with us) and one starting its run. thats when i learnt what “can’t even hear myself think” means!!!.
same place, same job, another year and concorde came a close second.
