Your Variation Of Music: Discussion

Seeing that i’ve seen people talk about their variation in music, I thought to start a thread here.

For me, I have on my itunes Beethoven, Bach, Burgmรผller and of course, one of my favourite composers – Scott Joplin.

I have artists such as Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette then bands of the modern day such as the fray.

Ontop of this, I then have foreign music (mostly Spanish) by artists such as Merche, Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez.

I want to search for new genre and also take into consideration older music and of course, the respected artists who made music what it is today.

One of the older artists that I have, which I think all people my generation should have, simply, the beatles.

I can take any music apart from grunge. And light opera (Although I do recognise the talent it takes to sing it).
My Mp3 has Beatles, Motown, Willy Orbit (Old stuff and new dance stuff), DJ Tiesto, 5 more “Clubmix” albums, Creedence CR, Blues Brothers soundtrack (The proper one not the 2000 insult), Stones, Dylan, Allman Brothers, Genesis, The Who….Quadrophenia of course, plus Tommy and all the hits, Bryan Adams, Dire Straits, Elvis, Bob Marley,Pink Floyd, Muse, Simple Minds, Talking Heads, Smiths, Roxy Music, Police/Sting, Sailor and finally, The greatest speaches of Winston Churchill.
The album collection has lots of classical and other stuff too….mainly the obvious stuff like Strauss/Chike/Beethoven/Royal Marines band.

I have around 1300 CDs, Demos, official bootlegs, rare collector vinyls etc.

I also download sometimes when i am way too impatient for that album to come to me via Amazon, since here in India we don’t get a very wide selection of international artists as yet.

The only music i cannot bear even for one second is rnb, rap and hip hop.

i actually don’t download anything….. you just can’t beat the feeling of a physical CD. ๐Ÿ˜€

I down load some but love albums too i own over 700, But store All of them on PC rather than keep playing the CDs.
My wife thinks im a bit of a manic collector.

I also may be very badly addicted to music and would require rehab in later stage of my life.

Couldn’t agree with you more on this KabirT, I think that Apple should be made to open up a rehab facility to help cure my addiction to downloading stuff from iTunes!:D

As for my taste in music, I like listening to a wide variety of genres including alternative, dance, electronic, new age, pop, rock and a bit of metal (just not the really heavy stuff!)…not a huge fan of garage, hip-hop, RnB, rap (what do you get if you put a ‘c’ in-front of ‘rap’ is my motto!:D:diablo:).

I also love to listen to songs/music featured in TV adverts, don’t know why, but they always seem to be quite catchy and appealing to me, so I end up having to use YouTube to find out what the song is that is used and then download it from iTunes if it is available!

I find i enjoy different music for different moods, I can’t do your X factor things or the plastic pop that often gets in chart,c or the idea of covering classic hits that goes on a lot lately.

Are you sure this is a good idea, Robbie? ๐Ÿ˜€

In all honesty I can’t really say much beyond I like anything I listen to that I consider to be good. I’ve been subjected to so many different kinds of music over the last 15 years I really don’t have specific genres of music I like. In fact what I like tends to depend on the music having certain characteristics.

Space. I like space. I don’t like sounds that are too cluttered where things don’t have enough room to breathe. You can pile instruments in there as long as the arrangement allows each one to sit where it should and allows the others to do the same.

Feel. Feel is good! Soul-less, unemotional performances do nothing for me. I can appreciate them if the person performing is technically brilliant, but it won’t affect me in any other way.

Tone, Technique and Dynamic. I like musicians who think about how their instrument sounds and dedicate time to improving it through improving their technique. A guitarist hiding his quick licks behind a sea of distortion doesn’t interest me at all. If he can go straight into his clean channel without effects and still play it without there being 90% fretbuzz and 10% actual note, then I start to take notice! The same goes for drummers who don’t understand the dynamic balance a drum kit should have. If you hit a 16 inch crash cymbal as hard as you can, it’s louder and more prolonged than hitting the snare as hard as you can. I’m not usually a huge fan of drummers who can’t grasp this concept but the same general principle applies to any instrument!

Rhythms and Melodies that interest me. This I can’t explain. I’ll just either find it boring, OK, or I’ll love it. As a quick example, Coldplay bore me. The Feeling don’t. As I say, I can’t really explain that one!

Players who understand each other. It’s great having all of the above, but with the wrong combination of people it simply won’t work. There’s nothing better than watching a band who really do play well ‘as a band’ and you get a wonderful, unified sound that makes perfect sense as a complete entity rather than individual people who actually sound like individual people.

If a track has all the above qualities (and a few more), the chances are I’ll like it regardless of the genre it sits in.

I could expand massively on this, but me and my G&L bass have a jam session to get to. Plus, I don’t want to bore anyone further! ๐Ÿ˜€
