i found this rather disturbing.

not so much the image itself, but the photographer has it for sale.

it’s the SIA pplane that crashed in Taipei

EGNM i think your spot on with that one.Its important for people to see what could happen to any of us.Same thing with the crm videos i know this sounds bad but if we can learn from others mistakes then it will help save lives in the future. But i dont agree with stuff being sold for a financial gain at anothers loss.As mentioned above the M56 crash that day we got back off holiday we were going the other way on the motorway at around 12.30 and the bridge after the crash was packed with jo public just snapping away. Why ? Comet i know in the past we have had different views but with this i agree with you 100% its sick and twisted.

i fully agree with your comments EG.

as i said it’s a reminder of what can happen, i just dont think it’s sale it necessary.

if it is an accidental sale then the screeners should have noted this and withdrawn the pics sale option.

Right i’m prob gonna get slated for this…

I read through every AAIB report published, journals of accidents, how they’ve happened and whats gone wrong – most importantly WHY????

I believe that everyone involved in the day to day workings as well as some of these Arrogant passengers who go onboard making their demands should have the oppertunity to see what can happen.

Opps that mobile phone i was sending a text from on a CAT3 ils approach which interfeared with and distorted the ILS beam on a 2 mile final made us desend below a glideslope and clip a house on finals – here are the consiquenses. These people may take their actions a little more seriously

Pictures are a huge accout of the events that happened or lead up to an incident – what about people watching CCTV of the last known movements of a murder victim – help or hinderance is it? Trying to jog peoples minds as to if they’ve seen the victim etc

This topic is a very sensative subject and ALL VIEWS SHOULD BE RESPECTED

Monster – If the photographer has purposely put it for sale then I think everyone would agree that that would be in bad taste, anyone who buys it would be sick, you certainly wouldn’t want to stick it on your wall.

Just one thing that may save the photographer somewhat, usually the option on a.net is to sell all or none of your photos. Maybe hes ticked the all button without realising how it would look on this particular photo.
Only explaination I can think of, otherwise it is in very bad taste.

skypilot, as i said i have no problems with the image itself.

i dont find it offensive, it’s a part of life and things like this happen!

what i dislike is the fact that it is for sale on the net! that seems a little “off” if you ask me.

it’s rather disrespectful to the 90 people who died! basically your buying pictures of death, if you need it for research reasons i would be sure you would be able to get it if needed, but selling it on the net is rather low.

Just wishing to play devil’s advocate here…

If it’s so offensive, then why post a picture of it here? Secondly, everyone responding has gawped at it too!

From a valid viewpoint, such photos are an invaluable tool and are used all the time in CRM course, AAIB, emergency services etc. Yes, they can be horrific, but you’ll never stop people taking them. Making money – if that’s your job, what do you do? Sensationalism always has and always will sell (doesn’t make it right of course!).

Taking it further, should there therefore have been a news blackout on 9/11?

As for Comet’s comments, I admire his forthrightness and viewpoint. A lot of us would probably be more base in our instincts.

For the record, I have seen photos of crashes friends were killed in, video footage of the same (remember Air Crash Vol 1 & 2?), murder scene photos (during my old bill days) etc, etc. Whilst they are never pleasant (those who get a kick out of them really do need help) I do think they have a valid use. If you ever needed a reminder of the importance for aviation security, listen to some of the transrcipts from 9/11 aircraft CVR’s etc. Made me sick to my stomach, but brought the point home far more powerfully than reading about it could.

Seeking out such images for a buzz is sick, selling them to such individuals is sick. Using them so others may prevent such incidents again, vital.

Hope that stirs things up nicely!

Do you realize the clip taken by a local commuter was the evidence that why the AF Concorde crashed, and it improved safety standards on the jet and gave it a little more lease on life.

Anyway its no use telling you that….seems like your mind is made up already without space for change.

I think we need to keep a sense of perspective about this. I was at RAF Fairford when the two Mig 29’s collided although I was eating a doughnut when it happened. My brother in law shouted to me and all I heard around me was the clicking of cameras. I must have been surrounded by an awful lot of ghouls. For what its worth I have a picture of one of the pilots coming down in his parachute. Also my father was first officer on DC3’s with Aer Lingus and he was involved in a crash of a Tiger Moth he was being trained in, in which the instructor was seriously injured but he was only slightly hurt. He kept of photo of the crash to remind him of what can happen but I don’t think it makes him a ghoul.
My view is that to keep photos of dead bodies is ghoulish but a photo of a crashed aircraft is not as bad as some people are making out – in any case there are enough of them in aviation magazines and books..

The kind of sick individual who takes a photo like that is matched by the sick individuals who buy them, therefore if no one would buy these photos, then there would be no incentive to take them. It’s the same as those ghouls who go sifting through crash wreckage to collect “souvenirs”, they are all as bad.

I am somewhat into trains as well.
Everytime you get a crash low and behold a batch of photos get out…..
Now I know a little about emergency protocol in situations such as train crashes and RTAs with multiple persons involved…As soon as the emergency services are on scene the area gets blocked off..(by the police usually..But the ambulance staff and fire brigade will do it if the need arose…)
How the hell these photos are taken is beyond me….

On one RTA I attended in Brixton a couple of years back we were confronted by 1 sick individual whom, after having phoned the emergency services(he claimed) , taking pictures of the two cars with the occupants still in them!!!
I never found out what happened to him but I remember seeing him with a copper when we were getting one of the injured onto the ambulance.
Hope the sod had the book thrown at him..
What possesses people to stand there and profit off of the suffering of others is beyond me!!!

Its a morbid subject no doubt but one only has to be on the opposite side to a motorway accident to see how many rubberneckers are slowing down for a look. If you think thats bad my brother in law who works in Kinshasa (Congo) was telling me that an overloaded Antonov (26 I think) crashed on the end of the runway at the secondary airport in Kinshasa (Ndjili is the main one) a few years ago and the very next day he was sitting in traffic lights when two guys tried to sell him photos of the wreckage. The story that was going around was that some of the bodies had been hacked up to make better pictures. morbid is not the word.

As said, there are lots of crash pictures on a.net and although not very nice, I suspect they are well viewed, if you see a crash then a picture shows the result of this, thats why the media publish such pictures. The newspapers will publich picture like that after ever crash, there was a graphic of the M56 accident in the Mirror on Friday showing the carnage caused.

I think its a little harsh with the selling part. The option on a.net is to allow for all or none of your photos to be for sale, pressing the “sell photos” button after submitting this he may not have realised how that would look. I don’t think the photographer would be trying to make a profit from this but if that is the case then of course its wrong.

I agree that buying or selling pictures like this for your own personnal gain is wrong but that may not be the case here.
