Ysterplaat Airshow

Hello All

Had a two day show at Ysterplaat AFB, Cape Town this weekend. First time I have tried taking photies with my point and click – altho we never have as big a selection as the EuropeanUS shows, it’s always quite a professional affair and well worth the low entry fee and the heat stroke. Two pictures, if they show up – first one Shackleton MR 3 “Pelican 22”, second one – last piston engined Dak next to an upgraded C47TP or “Turbo-Dak” as currently used by the SAAF.

Sorry, I know by the standards of this forum, both are pretty crap, but perhaps they will do until someone posts something better from the show – I have a few more which I will perhaps post if I manage to get these two up.

Fabulous shots, Kukri. 1722 is a beauty and obviously receives the care and attention that an Old Grey Lady should! The sight and sound of a Shack are ones I dearly miss.

On a related subject has anyone seen the dvd of the ill fated 1716’s attempted journey to Duxford?

The Shack has a fair amount of flying hours, considering she doesn’t fly that often. The problem concerning her continued operation as a flying aircraft is actually the crew issue, as they are getting on a bit.

Take a look at www.saafmuseum.org.za and click the ribbon.

General Kriegler the pilot for Shackleton 1722 and patron of the SAAF Museum Cape Town, passed away this month.

RIP 🙁

Hi Kukri

Very nice pictures – don’t ever appologise – you take fine pics and these are different to those we usually see here.

Kukri

I second (or third or whatever) this sentiment. Perfectly fine pictures. Thanks for taking some of us to places where we’ve never been and may never go.

I’d sell my own mother to see that Shackleton!

I wouldn’t.
But it would be nice to see a Shack instead of the raft of Spitfires and Mustangs, I guess it wont happen though, the campaign against aviation wont let that happen.

Is South Africa becoming the Aviation Paradise it appears to be? Great photo’s and what a sky! Bit of a tonic for this cold and sunstarved Brit…

Isn’t Pelican 22 nearly out of airframe hours? Sure I read that somewhere.

I seem to remember seeing a while back that she was to retire sometime this year, so this may have been the final display…..

I know, back in 2002 she only had 90 hours left…… 🙁

One of the L-29s – they belong to a private aerobatic team sponsored by a south african petrochem (logo on nose). The team are called the Tigers (yes, I know, how to state the obvious) and do quite a nice show.

Also below, some more pelican 22 pics and one of a Yak-18 T sponsored by a local medical aid company. The Yak-18 also did some skywriting on the day.

The first Shackleton pic in this group is of engine start – about two minutes later I was forced to move because of prop wash 🙂

Great photos, but have not seen razor wire at airshows before, looks a bit extreme! Those tiger striped Delfins look nice.

Stieglitz LY-LVN became ZU-CWL 22/9/03 and is current so may have been a minor accident?

I can’t remember all the details but she is sitting up a pole somewhere!

If nobody else has posted, I’ll get back to you on this……..

Thanks Mpacha, any news is welcome. I have great memories about this aircraft when it was still flying here in Belgium. So any news would be great.

Greets,

J.V.

Wow, I had never noticed how much longer the fuselages of those turbo Daks are (it looks like the front end has been stretched), as well as the nacelles. I think they look pretty good, but I imagine many people would disagree! -Any way ‘vive la difference’, good to see them still hard at work!

I think the turbo dak is about a metre longer than the original.

Nice pictures Kukri, the moving ‘Growler’ was worth the admission ticket alone.
