Zeppelin Museum, Friedrichshafen

The Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is well worth a visit. The majority of the exhibit is centered on the LZ 129 Hindenburg, so much so that it might be better to call it the Hindenburg museum for if you went to find out about the early Zeppelins and their use during WW1 before and after or the modern day Zeppelin NT, you will be disapointed. However, the display of Hindenburg artifacts is impressive, as is the reconstruction of part of the Hindenburg’s passenger compartment, which has been created using the correct materials and construction methods.

A model of the passenger compartment. The museum has recreated roughly half of this.

The museum doesn’t allow flash photography (and I didn’t have my monopole) so this handheld shot is a little blured.
The cabins are nothing more than 6 foot square boxes into which they packed two beds. Also the walls were so thin that you’d be glad the noise of the diesel engines would drown out your neighbours snooring.

As an interesting aside Zeppelin now use similar fabrication techniques to construct aluminium bulk storage silos for material such as carbon black and plastics pellets. Their UK facility is located in Nottinghamshire, very close to the Annesley crash site for Stirling EH988 from 1661 HCU.

I’m currently trying to secure a Zeppelin model from them for NAM’s 2014 World War I display!

Went to this museum in 2007/2008. Really enjoyed it, thanks for the photos. 🙂
