Zurich – leafy green backgrounds (23-5-07)(LONG)

I visited Geneva/Zurich/Munich last week on a trip with friends arriving early morning at Geneva where we spent most of the day before departing to Zurich by car in the evening.

As it happens the EBACE Business show was on which we didn’t know about when booking our flights, it was heaving with bizjets and the Terrace (green tinted glass in front) was packed out with Spotters.

I’ve still to work through my Geneva pictures and concentrated on the Zurich and Munich ones first so I’ll add a few from the start of the trip later.

I’m not much of a Terrace person but the Zurich one is okay for photos as they taxi close by it but heat haze was a problem for the widebodies departing from Runway 16 as the temperture was in the mid 80’s. The midfield new Terrace wasn’t open like last time I was there so I can’t comment on what it’s like for views.

After a few hours on the old Terrace (and a trip on the Airside bus tour that last about 45 minutes) we headed out to the Runway 14/16 spot for mid afternoon where I went for a wander to use a spot I knew about from my last visit there 2 years ago.

Zurich Airport has excellent scenary around it and the one thing I didn’t want to do was stand under the approach to Runway 14 with only sky behind so instead I walked around to the Weather Station and shot these landers through a big green fence to get the nice landscape behind.

There was a fair distance between me and the landers with a 737 about 300mm on my DSLR but that was okay because with the depth of field the green fence wire competely tuned out and didn’t show in any of them. These are all from Wednesday 23rd.

In answer to the questions above we arrived at Zurich late on Tuesday 22nd and departed at 1pm on Thursday 24th.

I shot the landers on Runway 14 using a Canon 400D and Canon 100-400mm lense through the fence, there were no holes in it so by carefully placing the lense flush against the fence wire and shooting square on it tuned out the wire.

I deliberately moved about 100 yards further along from where I originally started shooting as the fence curved slightly which gave me a more square on view to the kind of backgrounds I was looking for, you don’t want to be shooting at an angle through these fences otherwise it will show as dull patches.

Here is a couple of views of where I was standing, this spot really is best with a 100-400mm lense as you are shooting most aircraft about 300mm and the big lense is push-pull which helps.

Canon’s 70-300mm IS lense turns to focus and you would have to be careful not to let it touch the fence or it would tend to lose sharp focus on the subject. It could be done though with care.

Hello Kevin,
We did the 1pm Airside Bus tour which was the perfect time to do it for what departed when we were there but the sun was right overhead so no use, I’ll have a look at them later anyway and see what I can do with them.

The timing was great there were three Swiss including an A330, Singapore 777-300 and the Thai A340-600. All departed right in front of us after we got off the bus.

It was 8 Swiss CHF’s for the Airside Bus Tour if I remember corrrectly or as one of the guys put it “8 chuffers”.

I took some viewing shots as well so I may Post those later as well.

Fred,

Super photo’s and everytime I look at them, they get better and better. Your work is simply just “superb” and these images prove that. Keep up the good work, and all the best.
