60 years or so of relations with Pakistan and China wont be forgotten in an Instant by the US no matter what new administrations come in because there are still ghosts and hawks within the US (lack off) intelligense agenicies which sees India as a country that could be a future rival.
For some reason the Indians dont seem to understand this. The US and any country in its possition will try to keep its hegmony over the world, in whichever way it can, technology economy resources will all be used as an tool to achieve and maintain their domination.
Do people think Iran would be in so much trouble if it had just agreed to buy nuclear fuel from the US? Its all about the money and keeping other countries under the thumb.
While the US is very good at this (although its policies look cack handed) other countries (i.e.) India somehow dont seem to realise whats going on.
Sitting on the outside looking in, I am left bemused and wonder why people (read politic) in India dont realise they dont need the US.
Infact if anything India has had sanctions for so long and is such a large country it has no need for the US, if anything the US needs India and its large middle class consumer market to fund its own high growth rates.
Its about time Indian politic grew up properly and realised it doesnt need all the values and Items offered by the land of the corporate scandals, mcdonalds and guns

mattReadin the recent F/A-18EF article in flight international it seems that boeing is offering, through the F/A-18EF, Ideals that india has been used to since years gone bye. They are stating IRST pods etc and sensoyphr fusion for the F/A-18 Block II+ .. They are basically admitting that when it came to production the F/A was much less of an fighter than touted by Boeing (suprise!) in some respects.
If India go for this or the F-16 you know a minister or IAF person will be getting a lot of Pendahs and Laddus somewhere in india for himself and extended 400 in his family.

The 8.56-metre-long Dhanush (which means bow) was launched from the ship, INS Subhadra, about 40 nautical miles from the Chandipur- on-sea integrated test range, about 200 kilometres from state capital Bhibhaneswar.
The test exercise was carried out by scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and tracked, from take- off to impact through an integrated network of sophisticated radars and electro-optic instruments for data analysis.
The Dhanush, which has a strike range of 250 to 350 kilometres, is a naval variant of India’s surface-to-surface Prithvi or “earth” II missile, uses a single stage liquid propellant engine, and is capable of carrying a warhead of up to 750 kilograms, news agency PTI reported, citing defence officials.
Being exclusivley developed for the Indian Navy, Dhanush has been previously test-fired in 2001, 2004 and 2005.
On three occasions earlier this week India test-fired Astra, an locally-built air-to-air missile, capable of carrying a conventional warhead of about 15 kilograms.
The tests on Astra came just days after Pakistan test-fired a modified Hatf-VII Babur cruise missile capable of carrying a nuclear payload and having a strike range of 700 kilometres.

ORISSA, India: Close on the heels of Pakistan’s successful test-firing of nuclear-capable, 700 km-range, Hatf VII Babar cruise missile Thursday, India prepares to test fire its two home-grown missiles from a defence base in Orissa in the next few days.
Scientists are all set to test ‘Dhanush’, the nuclear-capable naval version of the ‘Prithvi’ short-range ballistic missile – and an air-to-air ‘Astra’ missile from the Chandipur defence base in the state’s coastal district of Balasore, some 230 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, defence sources said.
Astra is being considered as a new system in India’s guided missile development programme. With solid propellant, the missile has a striking range of 25 to 40 kilometres.
While Dhanush is likely to be test-fired Sunday, about four rounds of Astra missile will be tested March 26 and 27, the sources said.
‘The Dhanush missile will be tested inside the Bay of Bengal from a ship – INS Rajput positioned nearly 60 km from the Integrated Test Range – at Chandipur and Paradip coast.
The Astra missile will be test-fired from launching complex no. II – of the ITR,’ the sources told IANS.
Dhanush, developed and built by the Defence Research and Development Organisation -, has a 250-km striking range and can carry single warhead up to 750 kg.
The missile, which is a part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme -, is about 8.53 metres long and 0.9 metre wide besides its launch weight about 4.4 tonnes. It uses liquid propellant.
Scientists have planned to test two variants of the ‘Dhanush’. While one will have a striking range of 250 km, the other will be able to hit targets 500 km away.
Similarly, the Astra missile also has been developed by the DRDO. The goal of this test-firing is to provide the Indian Air Force – with a beyond visual range air-to-air missile – to equip the IAF’s Mirage 2000, MiG-29, Su-30MKI and the Light Combat Aircraft -.

Astra (meaning weapon in Sanskrit) is an advanced long-range missile with a solid propellant engine and advanced guidance equipment. It is capable of achieving speeds of around Mach 4, four times the speed of sound.
Defence scientists said the missile is likely to be ready for induction by 2011-2012. According to the scientists, the latest tests were aimed to provide the Indian Air Force (IAF) combat jets with a beyond-visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile.

mattTo a certain extent, yes. Many modern SSK’s go down that route and the Russians are big fans of this approach too, including their SSN’s. However, you need to stay above a certain minimum, there’s simply no substitute for manpower in an emergency where you need to send damage control parties to different parts of the vessel.
Really? working within engineering i have seen soo many good machine and process control systems that are readily available of the shelf and redundencies and failsafes i find it hard to accept that you would need as many as 150 crewmen for a boat or in this case 70.
I do keep up with some naval news and i know the US have tried and experimented with lowering the number of people staffing some of their vessels and that didnt work so well, but i am talking about boats that are purpose built to have a smaller crewer.
Over the lifetime of a boat, the salaries you must pay for the men crewing it must be enough to purchase serveral atleast x2 the boat if you could half the manpower. (not just direct pay but insurance, maintanse etc.. cost overheards)
