I once had a chnace to witness to german PAH-1 helicopters surprising a US Army SAM Battery. The helos remained undetected until they showed themselves 300m from the SAM site.

But as I said, the most important factor in that equitation is the terrain. If the terrain offers cover an helo has a good chance to remain undetected from ground based systems, if it is a terrain without cover, then the helo is much more in danger.

I presume that any Indian drive into Pakistan would happen in the desert areas, as they offer less cover for the defender and alow the Indians to use their superior engagement range, the AH-1s would be facing a serious threat.

Also I think that the main threat will be the Phalcons and IAF fighters. Especially as Indian fighters equipped with modern BVR missiles can egange the helos without entering the threat envelope of manpads and other light air defences.

Hi, yeah the given range would be ideal one. On the other hand apart from the desert their are not that many places the tanks could cross. since theirs no point in sending in the AH1’s wheres theirs no armour i presume a good range, you do have a good point about the trees and all though …

As seahwak pointed out, Cobras will use trees and hills to pop off their TOW rounds before quickly hiding behind cover, much of the dangerous spotting will be done by the Bell 206s

last time i checked is was 20 cobras and 40 UH1’s

Armies are not their to be show cases they are their to be used when needed. Not just sit around with alll the modern equipment in the world so that you can show the world how shiny your bigger stick is..

I do not think it is a simple case of Islamist against Russians although it has been turned into such a war. There were reports some time back of Afghans etc etc fighting for the chechans. but i dont have the source.
