Drones may ship to Pakistan ‘within a year’: Pentagon

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon hopes “within a year” to deliver around a dozen unarmed drone aircraft to Pakistan to aid its fight against Islamic extremism, a US senior military official said Monday.
“I would like to think that we would get them there within a year, but quantity and so forth, I think, will depend on what are the right ones, and how many make sense for the fight that they’re in,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The official told reporters that while the United States is looking at sending about a dozen aircraft to Islamabad, the actual number of drone aircraft “could be more or less, depending on the need.”
“What we are trying to do is get with them to be able to articulate the requirements of what they need,” the official said.
Efforts are underway by US officials to “match the right equipment to the requirements. That’s what we are trying to work them through.”
Pakistan previously has also urged Washington to outfit its military with armed aerial vehicles like the Predator and Reaper.
US drone missile strikes against Al-Qaeda and Taliban figures in Pakistan have fueled anti-American sentiment because of civilian casualties, and drawn public condemnation from the government in Islamabad.
The United States has carried out nearly 100 attacks with unmanned drones in Pakistan since August 2008, killing more than 830 people. Figures range widely on how many civilians have been killed.
The unnamed official said Washington could supply around a dozen smaller, unarmed Shadow drones to Islamabad, to help with their surveillance and reconnaissance activities.
“We looked at Shadows, we looked at ScanEagles,” among other drones, the official said. “Shadow drones may in fact be the right platform at the end of the day.”
Shadow drones — smaller than the armed Predator and Reaper aircraft — are about 11 feet (three meters) long and have a wing-span of 14-feet (4.3 meters) with sensors and cameras feeding video images back to operators on the ground.
Pakistan’s military already has some drones of its own production which it uses for surveillance, but which are less sophisticated than those manufactured by the United States.
Last week, Pakistan’s foreign minister said the United States would improve its public standing if it let Islamabad spearhead armed drone attacks.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, in Washington for high-level talks, acknowledged in a CNN interview that drone attacks by US forces against Islamic extremists on Pakistani soil have “taken out some valuable targets.”
But he said: “The issue of sovereignty is there. People of Pakistan feel strongly about it.
“We want the ownership. We make the decision when to operate,” he said. “It will help improve the feelings in Pakistan,” he said.
The current government is giving support to Aerospace and to an extent you would hope any new government would do the same.
What does it mean when it says t hey have configured something? Is it a paper study? Feasability study? Aero model?
Is there funding behind it? resource? project team? Is it so that some one can get a paper published in a scientific journal?

Both missiles were fired. from all accounts the Dhanush having been fired from INS Subhadhra.
What were the reasons for the two tests?
Was it a quality test after the failure of the target missile in the last missile defense tests? Would make sense to do a spot check once in a while make sure the missiles are not fizzling out.
Also are all of the P51’s able to fire the Dhanush?
As Fiscal Year Nears End, Ministry of Defence Quietly Signs Big-Bang Deals

NEW DELHI — As the financial year nears its end, the ministry of defence (MoD) is rushing through several big-ticket purchases in the hope of using up the budget allocation for 2009-10. The “year-end” contracts run into at least a few billion dollars.
A host of defence deals have been signed in the past few weeks, while some deals are being negotiated for a final settlement. The aim is to sign maximum contracts by March 31.
Last weekend, the army entered its biggest defence contract in recent memory for acquiring two BrahMos cruise missile regiments at over Rs8,000 crore. An army source said the deal was stuck for months “but the financial yearend helped us out”.
A government source said they were also hoping to sign contracts for the upgrade of Mirage 2000 fighters at $2.2 billion and for purchase of Akash missiles for the air force at about Rs4,500 crore.
The government is trying to close these contracts in the next few days, so that the first payment could be released from the 2009-10 allocation.
MoD has been facing flak for its inability to spend capital allocations. It has been returning thousands of crores to the government each fiscal because of delay in concluding contracts, adversely affecting defence modernisation. For example, according to the revised budget estimates in this year’s budget presented last month, MoD was yet to spend Rs5,439 crore meant for purchases by January-end.
A ministry source said March had been “quite” productive, thanks to two high-profile contracts concluded during Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin’s visit and the approval for purchase of VVIP choppers.
When Putin was in New Delhi, the two sides agreed to a hiked price to refit aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov and purchase MIG-29K fighters for the navy, together for almost $4 billion. The VVIP chopper deal worth Rs3,726 crore was signed a few days ago after the cabinet committee’s approval.
Sources said the long-drawn contentious negotiations for the upgrade of Mirage 2000 fighters of the air force had been almost closed. The upgrade cost is $2.2 billion and at least one official said the contract may be signed in the next couple of weeks.
Several smaller contracts have been also signed in the past few days. Among them are the over $100-million repeat order for 400 Barak missiles for the navy and the air force’s $60-million order for Crystal Maze air-to-surface missiles.

Could you qualify or qunatify this statement? Just want to understand why you say this.
One thing that gets me about the PAK-FA is that why did they not make the belly equal to the lowest point of the engine casings/fairings, as you could imagine it would make the manufacture of the structure in that regiong more straight forward get rid of horrible corners and curvatures and give a bit more not a lot but a bit more volume for the storage compartments.
Is it a aero thing? Are they using the engine fairings to keep the air in that channel in the middle ?? create some kind of 2D aerofoil section?
As for an S-shape to the inlets, who really cares? The Russians know what they have done and they have put it on a prototype so obviously they are not worried by the design. If the reflections from the fans was that bad/significant they would not ignore it. If it is a straight inlet and you could see down the walls then horay but maybe the Russian engineers thought of it already and have a counter for it or they know its not a big deal. If we in a forum know something about fans and radar signatures you can guarantee the Russian designers will know more about it…
Well if flying around is an issue why can not the Indian Army or Airforce, either one, stick the radar onto a blimp?

From what I understand of ASTOR’s capabilities i can detect people movement on the surface similar to J-STARS (? not sure if it is this acronym or another acronym).
Could it be as simple as changing the camber of the wing with speed using the leading edge slats and lerxs?

For all those who care, hence forth let it be known Brahmos, is the bestest missile in the world and the Indian army does not need anything else because brahmos can deal with everything.
It can even be used for ballistic missile defense and is particullary useful for pillboxes with snipers who have 300km range rifles.
For the record, what RahulM (and others) are saying is pretty straightforward, the Brahmos is a very useful missile from the IA point of view. They get a hard to target system able to reach out till 290 km, which they can use for a variety of purposes.
Name the variety of purposes.
Again, you seem to be mixing up things here. The Brahmos is a system. Pls. stop thinking in terms of systems, start thinking of system of systems ie how various tools in the toolbox are used, and what are the information systems that flow into them. Kindly go back to my prior post about what overall plans relate to, and then think about the issue. The Brahmos by itself is not meant to deter the PRC or Pak- thats not its role. What it offers though, is very valuable. An ability, to hit heavily defended targets, on a time sensitive basis.
What is this punitive action business you are talking of? This is absolutely unrealistic stuff. Any use of Brahmos, either in the west or the north, means all out war. Period. Its not some toy that can be used against Pak but not the PRC. It can be used against either, as long as India knows and has planned for what follows thereafter! Which is a conflict.
You are mixing up so many things here, that it does not relate to how things are done on the ground!
First, India operates on the basis of regiments, battalions, brigades, divisions and corps! Each has specific systems allotted to it depending on its organizational structure and which can be used for tactical support! Then there are systems allocated to AHQ level (strategic or even corps level!) and after that there is the Strategic Forces Org which keeps command & control of N weapons! Now in your post, you mix up all these & without even understanding where what system fits in and then come to the conclusion “Brahmos is not it” – well of course Brahmos is not what you claim it to be, but nor did the Indian Army ever claim it was what you claimed it to be, either!!
For lobbing stuff back and forth@ the level of the 2nd Arty – again, thats not the job of the conventional rocket arty or the gun tubes – here again, Smerch is Corps level support, Pinaka can go down to the regimental level (and at Kargil, BM-21s were supporting platoons!). When you talk of 2nd Arty level, do understand the IA is setting up regiments for operationalizing long range strike, and these include both Brahmos & other systems (Agni et al which come under the SFC).
All in all, its very unclear as to what you are even referring to and what you envisage the 2nd Arty’s role to be in a potential conflict, and as to what you think versus what is, versus the IA setup which would reflect in how it approaches the problem. Unless you detail these questions, the debate is not really factual in any sense.

Again – mistaken understanding of the overall setup. This is the IA we are talking of. HAROP and HARPY were purchased by the IAF, which also has Kh-31’s and Kh-25’s and also ARMAT (which may be phased out).
And you would be very mistaken in thinking what HAROP is meant for is the same as what Brahmos offers!! HAROP is nowhere as potent as Brahmos – its meant for either low defended targets, or stationary systems such as radars and C3I which dont have the resources to take the HAROP down before it can strike!! In contrast, Brahmos is meant for those targets which can and do defend themselves but still need to be hit in a time sensitive fashion.
Unless you do some basic research in understanding who has what, and for what reason, you will not understand what these systems are meant for, and how they will be used. Buzzwords and repeating marketing is fine, but operational use another thing altogether.
Teer you seem to be confused or there seems to be some cross wires, anyway I am happy to agree to disagree.
India’s missile shield test fails: officials

BHUBANESWAR, India — India’s homegrown interceptor defence shield developed to detect and destroy incoming ballistic missiles failed during a test on Monday, military officials said.
The test was abandoned when the radars following the target, a nuclear-capable missile, lost track of it after it blasted off from a site 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Bhubaneswar in eastern India.
“The ‘hostile’ missile went off the radars after it took off and deviated from its trajectory and so the interceptor was not launched,” an official from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said, asking not to be named.
DRDO spokesman Ravi Gupta in New Delhi confirmed the seven-metre (23-foot foot) interceptor missile was not launched during Monday’s botched test.

Watch this writerNew Delhi, India — The Indian Defense Ministry’s Sixth Land and Naval Defense Systems Exhibition held in New Delhi last month showcased newly inducted equipment by the country’s navy and army. Defexpo 2010 saw over 650 companies from around the world display their products and systems for possible acquisition by India’s military.
But the indigenously developed Shaurya missile, capable of being fired underwater by Indian submarines, was the pièce de résistance of the exhibition. The missile is a canister-launched, solid-fuelled hypersonic surface-to-surface tactical weapon capable of carrying a payload of conventional or nuclear warheads.
With a range of 700 to 1,900 kilometers, the trajectory of the missile, unlike ballistic missiles, can be preprogrammed to make it difficult for anti-missile systems to intercept.
Using conventional fuel-air explosive warheads, the missile can cause devastation similar to that of a mini-nuke. The missile has been optimized for the Indian nuclear submarine program, represented by the nuclear-powered INS Arihant submarine.

The maritime strike capabilities of India, deep into the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, have leapt to a new level with the combined strengths of the Navy’s MiG-29Ks and Sea Harriers, and the Jaguars and Sukhoi SU-30MKI fighters of the Indian Air Force. That is in addition to the existing maritime surveillance aircraft types IL-38, TU-142 and the maritime Dornier-228.
A dedicated naval satellite for the Indian Navy is ready for launch by the Indian Space Research Organization this year. The satellite will further improve existing surveillance and net-centric communications in the Indian Ocean region between the navy’s ships, submarines and aircraft.
INS Arihant, the indigenously produced nuclear-powered SSBN submarine, left the Indian port of Vishakhapatnam for sea trials in the Indian Ocean on Feb. 25. Two more submarines of the same class are being produced and will be inducted for trials in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
India’s Defense Ministry took over the Hindustan Shipyard Limited in the port city of Vishakhapatnam this year to augment its submarine production program. Generous assistance and partnerships with the Russian government are also aiding India’s future naval production programs. The political guidance of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is visible in this sphere.
